VCAL students obtain Food Handling Certificates
On the 19th and 22nd of March, 25 VCAL students completed a certificate of Safe Food Handling. Working with trainer and former chef, Matt Gogarty from Diversitat, students worked through a day-long series of lessons, practical applications and assessments that enabled them to qualify for this useful certificate.
The focus for the day was on the correct application of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) systems to control biological, physical and chemical contaminants in food and during food production. To this end, students learned about the importance of proper personal hygiene, well-designed, cleaned and maintained work spaces, and current regulations relating to the preparation and storage of foods. They then applied this knowledge in the real-world setting of our Food Technology area.
Chef Matt also gave the students (and teachers) some handy hints on making the perfect omelette which they then prepared and ate for lunch.
It was quite a long and intense day and the students did a great job of staying engaged all the way until the final assessments were completed. Well done!
