Parents & Friends Association (PFA)

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of JMSS,

Can you believe Term 2 is nearly over?

I hope everybody coped with the exam stress ok!

The JMSS Parents and Friends Association has been incredibly busy and active since the beginning of the year, and as we approach the halfway point, it is my pleasure to bring you up to speed with some of the fantastic work that our PFA members have been doing in and around the school.

PFA Facebook Group

We are in the process of setting up a Facebook group for JMSS Parents and Friends.

Our aim is for this to be a focal point for JMSS families to share information about what is happening at the school, tips and tricks and for people to ask any questions about things they are unsure about. This will be a supportive space and we are hoping it will make a big difference to new parents who join the JMSS community each year.

We are very aware of the geographic distances some families travel to get to the school, so we thought an online community is the best way for parents to come together to support each other.

What would you like to see on the Facebook Group? It is a group for all JMSS Parents and all ideas are welcome.

To join, please go to:

www.facebook.com/groups/174317246577691 and send a request to join.

We are a closed group, not open to the public, but open to JMSS Parents and staff.

Recent Events

The PFA has been busy assisting with and organising a number of events recently, including the Harmony Day Barbecue, when we fed all the students and staff at the school – no easy task! Thank you to all the parents who set up, cooked, served and cleared up on the day.

We also happily assisted with Year 10 Science Exhibition Night, which was a huge success. Special thanks go to Robyn Goode, who came along and provide a great deal of help with the tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits for the masses. We raised over $150 on this one night alone, and could have raised more, if we had had more chocolate biscuits (and other food). This is something we will bear in mind next year.

PFA Meetings

Our meetings this year are very well attended, which is making the roles of our committee and office bearers very easy!

Now that we are half way through the school year, I would like to thank the parents who give up their time and come to the monthly meetings full of input and ideas. I would also like to especially thank Amanda Stephens, Liam Hensel and Sally Cheah-Johnson for their support from the school. They go above and beyond, attending meetings after-hours (and after a long day at school already) and offer invaluable support and good humour.

Our next PFA Meeting  is scheduled for Tuesday 14 August at 7.00pm, and will be held at the school, in the staff room on the ground floor.

All JMSS Parents and Friends Welcome.

Fundraising

The PFA do a wonderful job of coordinating various fundraisers to help support JMSS. Presently, there are a couple of large fundraising efforts at work in the JMSS Community:

Entertainment Books

Entertainment Books serve as a guide to the most popular restaurants, attractions, shopping, travel and more, and offer purchasers a range of valuable offers, with discounts up to 50% and 2-for-1 offers.

We are currently taking orders, with part-proceeds from each sale going directly to JMSS.

Please visit: https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/1n95048

to purchase your 2018/19 Entertainment Book and support JMSS.

Each book costs $70.00, however it doesn’t take long to pay for itself!

There is both a paper version, which can be

collected from the school office, and a digital version, which you will always have with you on your phone. Thank you to Ramon Araujo for organising this for us!

Ritchies Community Benefit Cards

Also, when you are next at a Ritchies IGA, please sign up for the Ritchies Community Benefit Card and nominate John Monash Science School as your preferred beneficiary.

Thereafter, when you shop, simply present your card and JMSS receives funds from their Community Benefit Scheme.

Please ask all your family and friends to do the same. The more people who nominate JMSS, the more funds raised for the school and our kids.

For more information on the Ritchies Community Benefit Card, please go to: https://www.ritchies.com.au/community-benefit-card

Thank you to Nickie Fidge for organising this fundraiser!

Happy and safe holidays to everybody, and see you next term!
