JMSS Students on SBS World News

Following on from their recent success in the Australian Information Industry Association’s national innovation awards (iAwards), three JMSS students, Praneel Chugh, Aashutosh Sapkota and Angad Singh, were featured alongside Peter Currie, Director of Research at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) on the SBS nightly news on Sunday 17 June.

Speaking with journalist, Sarah Abo, the students spoke at length about their work with ARMI researchers which led to the development of their Movement Impeding Device (MID) and its application in the study of zebrafish embryos.

Congratulations to the three students, both on their iAwards success, and on being excellent ambassadors for John Monash Science School!

EMR Cross Country

On Tuesday 19 June, we had 27 students represent JMSS at the Eastern Region Cross Country at Yarra Glen Racecourse.

On what was a very cold and foggy day of competition, it was rewarding to see that we had such a large team for this event, with all participating students performing admirably and giving their best efforts.

Excitingly, three groups came back with medals.

Our 17 year-old girls were 3rd in the teams event, our 16 year-old girls were 2nd in the teams event, and our 15 year-old girls were 1st in the teams event.

This first place qualifies the girls for the State Championships on Thursday 19 July, early in Term 3.

Congratulations on all of our 27 competitors on reaching this level of competition, performing well on the day, and showing the JMSS spirit, and a special congratulations and well-wishes for the 15 year-old girls team as they head to the State Championships!

JMSS Students to represent Australia at Physics Olympiad

Two JMSS students are among just seventeen young Australians selected as part of the national team to participate in UNESCO-sanctioned International Science Olympiads in July and August.

Boris Deletic and Vladimir Mikho, both in Year 12, have both been selected to compete for Australia in the Physics Olympiad in Portugal, and were presented their official team blazers in a ceremony held at Parliament House in Canberra this week.

The event, which was also attended by Australian Chief Scientist, Dr. Alan Finkel, and Assistant Minister for Science, Jobs and Innovation, Senator the Hon Zed Seselja, marks the beginning of the lead-up to the olympiads, and recognises the talented students who will represent the country in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics on the international stage.

Boris and Vladimir, should be congratulated on this magnificent achievement, having outperformed more than 6,000 other students from some 280 schools around Australia to secure places on the national Physics team, which is comprised of just five members.

Well done and the best of luck to these students as they represent JMSS and Australia!
