Dear Parents and Students,

Term 2 has been a very busy time for both the staff and students.  We had exams and many events such as Science Exhibition Night, opportunities for overseas competitions, sports and music events.  The pace has been hectic.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you (our students) for your commitment to your studies.  I would also like to commend you for your effort in your preparation for the exams. You have shown dedication and resilience in applying yourself to your studies.  Well done!  Your next step now is to receive the outcome from your exams and receive the feedback of your performance from your teachers with courage and determination to improve. I would like to remind our students that learning is not just about obtaining an excellent numerical score from your assessment. It is about continuous improvement, meaning that you learn from your mistakes and seek to improve.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our staff.  Our staff here at JMSS are outstanding in their level of commitment and dedication. Most days I find teachers staying back, long after school hours, coaching students in their studies and supporting students in events such as in debating competitions, music practice and in sports.

Special Events

The last of couple of weeks of term feature a number of very special events:

Year 10 & Year 11 Formal

Firstly, the Year 10 & 11 Formal is taking place on Friday 22 June.  We are looking forward to a most enjoyable and successful evening.  I would like to thank the students in the Formal committee (Yuko Ito-Kay, Nicole Zillman, Tabitha Eker, Yoshiyuki Takeya, Rajpreeth Gaddam, Bi Yan Low, Ahnaf Hossain and Angela Li) and Mrs Lisset Hernadez for assisting me in the organisation of the event.  They have done an outstanding job and I am sure the evening will be a great success.

Pierre de Coubetin Award

It is with great pleasure I congratulate Rushi Patel (Year 12 student) who received a very special award from the Victorian Olympic Council– the prestigious Pierre de Coubetin Award.

This award recognizes students who demonstrate values that are consistent with the Olympic Movement through participation and achievement in sporting activities. Congratulations and well done Rushi!

I would also like to draw your attention to a Year 10 event in the first week of Term 3:

Monday 16 July (Day 1 of Term 3):

Year 10 Personal Development Program

The program will run with four one-hour sessions with sub-programs on:

  • Road Smart / Driver Safety Awareness;
  • Family Planning;
  • Smart Investing; and,
  • Self-Defence.

The four sub-programs will be conducted by external agencies such as TAC and Commonwealth Bank.  Period 5 lesson will be as per the scheduled timetable.

Words of Wisdom for JMSS Students

I have been reading some articles from Happy School.com and below is a passage from one of the articles that I would like to share with our students:

Watch Your Self-Talk

"That little voice inside our heads has a powerful impact on our attitude. We can certainly be our harshest critic. It is important to monitor our self-talk and watch that we are being fair and reasonable on ourselves. Watch for self-talk where you beat yourself up about what you haven’t done today. Try to instead focus on what you have already achieved."

To conclude, I would like to wish all students a safe and restful term break holiday.  I hope students will use this holiday to reinvigorate, and recommence Term 3 with recharged energy.
