Staff Profile

Su-Nhi Kim

I joined the staff at Scoresby Secondary College in January 2006 and have taught here since.

My family migrated to Australia from Belgium in 1987 because we had heard from friends and family that it was ‘the land of opportunity’, which I am a firm believer that it still is. I spoke no English but quickly learnt through my younger cousins and their friends, before I attended my first school in Australia – the English language school in Noble Park for a period of six months before I headed to Springvale High School for the remainder of that school year. I then moved onto Dandenong High School where I completed my VCE and then gained a place at Monash University where I completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in French and Sociology.

I found myself drawn to volunteering my time towards giving back to the community and I spent the next 15 years being the Treasurer for the Vietnamese Community in Australia on both a state and federal level. This led me to have an interest in working with the many young people I came across, of multicultural backgrounds – the challenges they faced reminded me of my own struggles as I tried fitting into a new country whilst trying to retain my own cultural identities.

I then took up a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Melbourne to help formalise my skills and provide me with a platform to work with young people. I gained employment with Juvenile Justice and the Department of Corrections. After spending several years in this area, I decided to return to studies as a mature age student to complete a Bachelor of Education in Primary and Secondary Teaching at Deakin University. Scoresby Secondary College is my second place of employment as a teacher and I have not looked back since.

At Scoresby, apart from my teaching duties in the Humanities and Languages areas, I have held some leadership roles in the college at some time or another. Assistant coordinator and Programs Manager at Middle School over a 5 year period, and Head of the Humanities & Languages Faculty for a 3 year period.

I have seen students enter our college as young and fresh-faced 11-12 year olds and leave our school gates after completing their schooling here, as confident and enthusiastic young people eager to leave their mark on this world.  I have spent the most part of my working life here and I hope to continue to make positive contributions to our ever-growing community of students, parents and staff.
