Ronald McDonald House

On Friday, the 31st of August, SRC members from Year 6 to 10, Middle School Leaders and Junior School Social Justices Leaders, visited the Ronald McDonald House in Clayton. The aim was to see what the non-profit organisation does to help the many families that need their assistance.

The role of Ronald McDonald House charity helps keep families together, while children undergo care at the neighbouring hospital. The charity provides free accommodation for families who cannot travel every day from their home to the hospital to see their ill child or sibling.

Oakleigh Grammar has been donating non-perishable food items and toys to the house for many years, but this year the whole school got involved and donated the largest amount of items to date.

While at Ronald McDonald House, the students and teachers received a guided tour, enabling them to see just how big the premises actually is. The house has many rooms of different sizes to accommodate as many people as needed. In these rooms, there are beds, TVs, chairs and bathrooms, just like a normal hotel room would have. The house has one big kitchen where anyone can help themselves to the food in the fridges and cupboards, as well as being able to use all the facilities there. The house also has an entertainment room and numerous books for those staying there, who have a little bit of extra spare time.

After visiting the house, we all walked across to the hospital to so we could view a very special family room facility. This family room is for those who are at the hospital for long periods of time and need a break from all the beeping monitors. This room has a kitchen area where anyone can help themselves, a dining area, a few couches, a bathroom and laundry to clean up in.

Overall, the whole experience was incredible. The whole charity and organisation is there to make things easier for families going through a tough time because of their ill family member. The environment is very welcoming and inviting, and does really make a difference on the families. This excursion has really made a lot of us want to help out more with organisations like this and to help those in need. Donating even the smallest amount or spending a little bit of your time volunteering really does make a difference and does help many people in a lot of ways.
