During August the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) committee announce the best young adult books in 2018. Years 7–9 English students will be provided with a booklet with the list of finalists. TAs can take advantage of this offer too.
You can choose your favourite novel on the voting slip and leave it in the library. In August, Shepparton High School and the CBCA will announce their winners! We will give you a sample of the six books vying for the prize in the next three newsletters.
The Traitor’s Kiss by Erin Beaty. Sage Fowler has a ‘short fuse’ and is not deemed fit for a ‘suitable marriage.’ However, she is apprenticed to a matchmaker and tasked with finding appropriate marriageable suitors for other young ladies for political alliances. This is a thrilling tale of intrigue and danger and a balancing act that will determine the fate of her kingdom.
Ready to Fall by Marcella Pixley. Following the death of his mother, Max Friedman starts to believe he’s sharing his brain with a tumour. As he becomes engrossed on controlling the malignant tenant, he begins to lose touch with his friends and family, and reality. Max’s father sends him to an arty school to refocus and here Max begins to feel happy, the ghosts of his past seem to fade – until one night they resurface and Max is forced to face the truth.
Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman. It’s been a year since Rowan went off-grid. Professional scythes control death and Thunderhead controls everything else – and Rowan is becoming known as an urban legend, sussing out corrupt scythes. Things are beginning to unravel in a perfect world. Will Thunderhead intervene or just watch?
The Boy who Lied by Kim Slater. Ed Clayton is a liar. It all started when his Dad went to prison and now it’s hard to stop. When Ed’s younger brother Sam goes missing, nobody believes Ed when he says he can’t remember what happened. Police and press are asking questions leaving Ed to figure out the possibilities. Oddly, it’s up to a liar to uncover the truth.
CBCA NOMINATION: Take Three Girls by Cath Crowley, Simmone Howell & Fiona Wood. All three girls are targeted by PSST, a toxic website that deals in gossip and lies. The school antidote to cyber-bullying is to make all year 10’s attend the Wellness Program – a very good program; but sometimes all it takes is three girls. This book explores friendship, feminism, identity and belonging. It is honest, raw and funny. Review taken from Pan Macmillan Australia 6/6/18
CBCA NOMINATION: Mallee Boys by Charlie Archbold. Sandy knows that life at 15 is hard, since his Mum died a year ago, nothing’s gone right. His brother Red is 18 and working the farm. As Sandy and Red deal with girls, dirt biking, footy and friendship, both have to work out who they want to be, without their Mum. It turns out this is going to be one hell-of-a-year. Homework Club
The library is open straight after school until 5:00pm each Monday. Snacks are provided and teachers will be available to help with any questions students might have. All students are welcome to attend.
Bridge Club
All interested students should come at the start of lunchtime and bring their lunch each Thursday lunchtime. The Shepparton Bridge Club send experienced volunteers to help you learn the game. Other schools are participating so we can hold an inter-school competition near the end of the year!
