11/12 Camp

Rebel with a cause

by Caterina Pacitti (Year 11 Coordinator) and Linda Kay (Year 12 Coordinator)

Our Years 11 and 12 students have started the year with great enthusiasm and focus. During the camp they had the opportunity to build relationships and become a strong and supportive DP cohort. Being based at Queen’s College at the University of Melbourne enabled them to get a feeling for the academic precinct and gave them a good insight into university life. Students became familiar with both the State and Baillieu Libraries.

In the spirit of community, there was a series of brief lessons delivered by Year 12 students who shared their knowledge of TOK (Theory of Knowledge) with the Year 11s.

Our overall theme, though, was Rebel with a Cause  and students went on various outings throughout our fascinating city, celebrating the history of resistance and independence.

Melbourne’s Wayward Women exhibition gave us a glimpse of those brave enough to go against the norm, whilst the Literary tour was an opportunity to realise bohemian history. The Graffiti walking tour and KAWS exhibition challenged our perception of contemporary artwork.

The Amazing Race and Photobomb extravaganza were once again highlights of the camp and, thanks to Kris Austin’s crazy sense of humour, we had students traversing the city trying to find their cleverly disguised teachers. We were all delighted to discover (Amy’s) massage parlour and (Dan's) Murphy’s liquor store.

We were never short of entertainment, from Shakespeare Under The Stars, international treats at the Queen Vic night market, trivia with the one-and-only Amy “Feel The” Byrne, and our greatly anticipated film selection, multi Academy award-winning Parasite.

Kristen from Queen’s College was very welcoming and helpful and we are so grateful for the dedicated group of teachers who supported the students through the week.
