Handbury and Winifred Berry Libraries

Congratulations:

The first student to have had enough books verified to meet the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is Macey Hermon of Year 4.

Please remember that parents (or Boarding Staff) need to send a note to either Mrs. Nettleton or myself to say that the reading has been done. This can be an email.

The other critical thing is that if your child wishes to be named in the press release, then you need to send us a note about that also. The default situation is that we do not have permission until notified by you.

Thanks to all families who are supporting reading.

Book Week, Book Week, Book Week! I am almost certain that, when I have my library hat on, this is all that I am thinking about at the moment. The Children's Book Council of Australia have, yet again, put out a fabulous short list of books for Book Week this year. We are working hard to read as many of these books to the children as possible over the coming weeks and we are also making displays of the work we are doing in relation to these books. We have read some hilarious ones; Piranhas Don't Eat Bananas is a good example of one of these! There are also some very meaningful books about refugees, orphans and landmines we have shared with some of the older students. These have sparked very in depth conversations about how great life is in Australia, the way other people live and how important it is to discuss books with their families and friends because sometimes a picture book is so much than a children's story. They can teach us about the world around us using fabulous illustrations to accompany the words. At times, the illustrations tell us more than the words themselves and can encourage questioning and learning. Please motivate your children to read books of all descriptions, regardless of their age; non-fiction, picture fiction, novels, short stories - read them all! While we do want children to challenge themselves in their reading, sometimes it is nice to read an old favourite. Most importantly, we need to foster a love of reading in our children and what better way to do this than with fabulous books.
