Girls' Football Report
JUNIOR TEAM 1
Round 1 caught the girls by surprise with a very congested start against Baimbridge. Overall we managed to win the first game 7-1 with a goal to Izzy Quine.
Round 2 saw the team playing Casterton - a very experienced girls’ side who moved the ball well with a high level of skill. The girls fought with all their might but ended up going down by 2 goals.
Round 3 versus our arch rivals Monivae: the first half was a hotly contested by both teams. The second half looked like College had won the arm wrestle; with help from Niamh Sutherland kicking 2 goals for the match we held on for victory.
Overall
The girls had a hard fought day out in the elements, ending with 2 wins and 1 loss. The girls played with high spirits with both individual and team efforts throughout the day.
Better players on the day: Holly McLeod (MEDAL), Izzy Quine, Alannah Sander, Niamh Sutherland and Maddie Mutch.

JUNIOR TEAM 2
Game 1 College 2 versus Monivae
After a few early bumps and tackles the girls warmed to the physical aspect of football - some would say they took to it like a duck to water! The first game was a tough encounter of contested football with the midfield winning most of the play around stoppages. Despite having the ball in their forward area for reasonable periods, College was unable to get the ball through the big sticks. The back line repelled the opposition attacks on many occasions, but unfortunately Monivae were able to squeeze through a goal to defeat College by seven points.
Game 2 College 2 versus Hawkesdale
College was keen to make amends for the disappointing result in the first game and hit the ground running in the second game. College played a great team game, running in numbers and providing shepherds to protect the ball carrier. This allowed the ball to be moved quickly to the forward line where Ellie Jeal weaved some magic to score two quick goals. With momentum on their side College kicked another goal courtesy of Olivia Anagnostou, eventually winning by 19 points.
Game 3 College 2 versus College 1
The third game put College 2, made mostly up of Year 8 students against College 1, which had mostly Year 9 students. It was the game that all had been anticipating and it didn’t fail to disappoint. It was a tough game of tackles, smothers and bumps as both teams refused to give up the ascendency. At times there was some break away play, but the backline of both teams held firm. It was easily the best game of the day and possibly the best game played between two all female teams at Pedrina Park for some time. Despite outplaying and outcoaching their much older peers the College 2 team had to settle for a hard fought draw.
Game 4 College 2 versus Baimbridge
In the final game College 2 came up against Baimbridge College, who were fresh off the bye from the previous round. College looked the much smaller team, but what they lacked in height they made up for with speed and endurance. There were some excellent passages of play, where College moved the ball from one end to the other, but as in the first game, getting the ball through the goal posts was proving to be a difficult task. Eventually the opposition were able to do just that and snatched the game by seven points.
All the girls thoroughly enjoyed their opportunity to play football and I think the wet conditions, with the mud, made it even more fun. You could go through the list and mention every player and how they made worthwhile contributions to the team’s success and enjoyment of the day. Best players chosen by the football panel were Mitzi Adamson (Medal winner), Eliza Jagger, Cassidy Beal, Claire Cumming, Grace Austin and Willow Sharrock.

Senior Girls' Football
Game 1
The senior girls were pumped and ready to kick off their campaign against Casterton. The first half saw the College girls dominating the play with ferocious tackling pressure but couldn’t get the score on the board. Thankfully in the 2nd half we managed to get a goal thanks to Sara Kosch and we won 1.5= 11 to no score. Better players were Elly McLean, Brooke Mibus, Nyah Bester and Phoebe Sweeney.
Game 2
Next up was Baimbridge and a great display of team football and some great passages of play, the girls jumped their opposition in the first half kicking 4 goals to nil. The second half was full of squandered opportunities in front of goal but we still won comfortably not allowing Baimbridge to score at all for the game. Goal kickers were Poppy Bones x 2, Skye McIntosh and Sophie Hines. Better players were Skye McIntosh, Poppy Bones, Annabel Mould, Shayleigh Ingelse and Elly McLean.
Game 3
The match we were all waiting for had arrived – the grand final against arch rival Monivae. With both teams fired up the first half was a great spectacle with our younger side getting in first for the footy and winning free kicks at will from the umpires. Skipper Elly McLean got the first goal with some inspirational play however we allowed them to get a goal into the wind to have the scores level at half time. After the break we could not sustain our pressure across the ground and Monivae were victorious 3.2 = 20 to 1.0 = 6. Better players were Annabel Mould, Phoebe Sweeney, Elly McLean, Skye McIntosh and Shayleigh Ingelse.
Overall, the girls had a lot of fun, improved greatly during the day and we look forward to next year with all of the team members eligible again. We hope we can go one step better and win overall! Well done to Elly Mclean for winning the medal as our best player on the day and thanks my assistant coach – Lachlan Gunn – and to Joe Williams, Seth Fiegert and Charlie Summers for training the team and helping out on the day.

Junior Hockey
Division 5
College Hurricanes took on Coleraine at a cold, wet and windy Pedrina Park. The team went down 1-0, but played some exciting hockey throughout. Best on ground for College were Ben Walker, Chloe Headlam and Minnie Walker.
Division 4
College Crusaders defeated Coleraine Gold 2-1 in an entertaining fixture. Ciaran Nelson and Olivia Allen were the goal scorers. Best on ground for College were Will Ash, Isabelle Musson and Will Merrin.
College Chiefs went down to an improving Dunkeld 4-1. Ted Koch scored the goal for the Chiefs. Best on ground for College were Chantel Jackson, Nina Pern and Toby Adamson.
College Rebels were on the wrong side of a 7-0 defeat. Chloe Lyon did not stop running for the Rebels, and was well supported by Jorja Hermon and Hamish Boyd Walsh.

Boys' Hockey
The two Under 16 teams met in a closely fought game on Saturday morning. This time, Gold ended up on top, recording a 2-0 victory.
Dylan Cunningham and Reagan Simons scored the goals, Dylan in the first half from a rebound inside the circle and Reagan with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area midway through the second half. For Gold, strong performances from Darcy Wall, Lachie Holcombe, Lachie Armstrong and Marcus Munro stood out in a very solid team performance. The boys pressured their opponents well and Blue struggled to play their usual flowing game. Tane Nelson was perhaps their best player with Sami Zehir, Alexander Boyd-Walsh and Euan Sutherland also catching the eye.
The two teams share the status of being top of the table so there is much to play for over the remaining rounds.
On Sunday night, the Open team played Monivae. The boys played some exciting hockey in the first half, opening up a 6-0 half-time lead. Tom Verco scored a hat trick, and Tom Bunge, Liam McMaugh and David Merrin each scored a single goal. The boys used pace and hard running to create openings with Josh Nichols, Tom Bunge and Tom Verco leading the way. The second half saw a second Bunge goal but, after that, the less said the better as our spread and crispness went missing and the game became more of a slog.
The Open team have two challenging matches ahead. We will need to play for the full seventy minutes in these upcoming games!
Finally, congratulations to Reagan Simons (Year 9) who has been selected as a member of the Victorian State Under 14 Development Team. This is a great achievement and a testament to Reagan’s commitment to and skill in, hockey. It is also a great recognition of the willingness of his parent, Peter and Michelle, to drive him miles to train and plan – and still meet local commitments. We look forward to hearing of Reagan’s exploits with the team. Best wishes, Reags!

Women's Hockey Report
At the time of writing this report, I have only just got the feeling back in my fingers. In one of the coldest afternoons at Pedrina Park the Thundersticks recorded a 3-0 victory over Coleraine.
It was great to welcome our Captain of Hockey, Emily Johnston back after a very successful week playing in the Australian U18 Championships. Lily McCure was also a welcome addition to the team. College controlled the ball for a large percentage of the game, but much like last week the forwards failed to capitalise on their opportunities. Mrs Williams finally broke the deadlock with a clever rebounding goal late in the first half.
The start of the second half was another frustrating period with lots of attack without reward. Hannah Nichols was terrific filling in on the half line, Claudia Roberts and Phoebe Sweeney worked tirelessly up forward and the energising battery, Mrs Williams, was always dangerous. Two late goals to Maddi Mutch and Hannah Nichols ensured victory for the Div 1 Girls.
Congratulations to Chloe Russell in Year 7 who has been selected to play in the U13 girls Victorian White team to play in the National Championships in Perth from the 29th Sept to 8th October. Chloe has worked very hard for this opportunity and we will look forward to hearing about her time away. Chloe will be travelling to Melbourne most Wednesdays and Sundays to train with her new team.
Miss Kristen Waldron
COLLEGE BLADES (B-GRADE WOMEN)
The College Blades played their best match of the season so far last weekend defeating the top team of the B-Grade competition, Demons 3-0, on what would have been the coldest day at Pedrina Park this year! To the girls’ credit, they were able to put together a full 70 minutes of well-structured hockey despite torrential rain and icy cold winds! Kirrily Jackson, Emily Crawford, Jemma Swanson and Skye McIntosh played exceptionally in defence and worked well to outlet the ball into the midfield. Olivia Allen and Lily McCure created some lovely passages of play and exciting attacking opportunities from the midfield and were well supported by Grace Austin, Shayleigh Ingelse and Valentina Marchant who used their skills to position themselves around the circle and defeat the Demons’ defenders, allowing them to be amongst the goal scorers for the match. Charlie Cameron and Billie Smitheram were both very brave taking on the role as GK throughout the match and prevented many potential goal scoring opportunities.
Best for Blades were Lily McCure, Shayleigh Ingelse, Olivia Allen, Skye McIntosh and Charlie Cameron

Basketball
After a delay of a week, due to the roofing problems at HILAC, the winter basketball season commenced this week. The College is fielding five senior men, 2 senior women, 3 under 14/15 boys and 3 under 14/16 girls with the possibility of another under 16 girls team. It was good to see our international students being involved especially our new arrivals who took to the court with a parent’s team. Unfortunately the basketball competition is split over two venue HILAC and Monivae. The teams will be playing at the same venue for the entire season. At the time of publication the results have not been posted on the Hamilton Basketball Association website, http://www.foxsportspulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=0-106-0-420640-0&a=COMPS , results and game times can be found here. The College is fortunate to have dedicated parents, students and staff who take on the role of coach/manager. It is important that all players are committed to training and they should check with their coach regarding training times. A lunchtime training session will be organised for those who due to travel commitments are unable to train after school. Basketball is a team sport and the only way a team can improve is to train.
Mr Ian Clare
Hoop Time
On Monday, a Year Six Boys and Year Six Girls team competed in the Hamilton Hoop Time basketball tournament. 17 teams from local primary schools took part in the annual event. Both teams made the semi-finals, and played some excellent basketball in the round robin fixtures. Special thanks to Mrs Sandra McQueen, Mr Alex Smith and Mr Nathan Fitzgerald for coaching and managing on the day.
