College Cricket Under 14 Report
With Pigeon Ponds Oval being true to its name, the first game of the season was moved to Pedrina Park 3, to ensure some cricket could be played. Losing the toss, College was asked to field first. Pigeon Ponds opening batsmen saw off the new ball and collected 25 runs each before retiring., one of these batsmen being Benjamin McCure, a student at the College. The College Cricket Club bowlers, many playing their first game in this division, found wickets hard to come by for most of the innings, until Toby Barrie rattled the castle of fellow student Charlie Johnston for 11. Lachlan Craig another student at the College, made a well compiled innings of 17 for the opposition. Dougal Mann was the pick of the bowlers and had the most economical figures. When it came for College to bat, the team was soon in trouble when both openers were dismissed cheaply by Fergus Roberts (you guessed it, another College student!). Hamish Wortley and Charlie Rivett steadied the ship with a good partnership of 22 before Charlie was caught for 14. Hannah Nichols put up some resistance, with some solid defence, but found scoring runs difficult against some very good bowling. Edward Beggs came in late in the innings, and despite being his first game in the under fourteens, helped himself to 11 chanceless runs. Unfortunately, Edward ran out of partners and also overs, with the final score being 78. As you can imagine, having so many College students playing from both sides, the game was played in great spirits. It warmed my heart to see a couple of batsmen go up to the bowler that dismissed them and provide a congratulatory hand shake. It almost made that Arctic breeze blowing across the field tolerable.
