KJ

In P.E. KJ is learning to catch balls by adjusting their hands and how to throw balls. They have also been playing games and rolling balls so they can improve their catching and throwing skills. Their favorite part is throwing the balls to each other and also running around and playing games. Trying to continue to have energy and some of the activities is a challenge for them. They fixed this challenge by taking rest breaks. Mrs Clarkson and Mrs A normally teach them P.E. Some of the habits of mind they use is persistence to continue to run, and to strive for accuracy to do the best they can.

KM

KM has been practicing to catch and throw. When doing this they have been throwing big balls and small balls such as handballs and tennis balls. A challenging part of throwing and catching was throwing tennis balls onto the witches hats. They had to use the habits of mind striving for accuracy and persisting to make sure they got the ball in the right spot. Another activity that was challenging was throwing balls with their eyes closed! A solution for this challenge was to open their eyes. The most fun activity was throwing balls under and over arm into hoops held up by other students. Overall P.E this week was fun and challenging!

Year 1

1J

1J Layken and Wes.

1J is learning all the interesting and fun things in gymnastics. Layken and Wes are enjoying this a lot, especially bunny hopping. They also love learning new tricks and skills. But when it comes to the balance beam they tended to struggle. But they persisted and strived for accuracy and now feel confident on the beam. Mrs D along with many other teachers helped Layken and Wes out a lot, and made it very fun!

1M

“Physical education is the only subject that makes your heart race”

This term in sport 1M have enjoyed building their throwing and catching skills so that they can use these skills in their future life. They have also been working on their running skills. A challenge they had to overcome was to keep running even when they were tired. A habit of mind they had to use was persisting so that when they were struggling or tired they kept going. Hugo said “ I love sport because it is fun and we get to work together as a class team”

1M had an amazing week of learning and are excited for the rest to come.

Year 2

2J

Year 2J is learning to play Tee-ball and other modified ball games! Why may you ask? So that they can be better at catching and throwing. They enjoyed hitting the ball in Tee-ball as far as they could and focusing on accuracy. They had a challenge to keep running and not stopping if they were tired. It was important that they kept running to support their team! They worked together and utilized persistence to keep going and gave it their best go! Mrs Fursey assisted to furnish an adequate learning experience and teach new skills.

2M

2M have been learning how to hit a ball off a tee correctly with a foam bat. They listened to their teacher at all times striving for accuracy. Mrs Fursey said they did a perfect job when hitting the ball off the tee and throwing the ball. They were challenged when trying to run all the way around the bases.

The students had to run for the ball and catch it and said running was tiring.

They had two rounds of the game, one they had to run around the circle to beat the other circle, while the other team was throwing the ball to one another. We had to get the ball to the start before the person that was running got around the circle twice.

Year 3

3J

In a windy week 3J have been learning all different types of passes in Physical Education. They have been practicing chest passes, shoulder passes and bounce passes. Some of the Habits Of Mind they used for success were persisting to learn different types of throws and thinking interdependently by working as a team to win the games. Some of the highlights 3J have had are bin ball, a game where there are 2 teams trying to hit the opponent’s bin with a ball. They also have enjoyed piggie in the middle passes, when they throw a ball to one another without the piggie getting hold of it. Overall they have learnt a lot during P.E. and have had fun while doing it.

3M

After our long weekend of relaxation, 3M has been making headway in the sport of throwing and catching. Sebastian and Charlie, St Joey's rising stars, have informed us about the things they have enjoyed in PE.

3M has greatly enjoyed the aboriginal game where someone throws up a ball and a friend catches it for them. It has helped them apply the Habit of Mind, Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision to get instructions to their partner easily. Something new that 3M has learnt is that the Indigenous People of Australia used this game as a way of communicating and having fun with each other. 3M wonder what this activity will lead up to. “Possibly cricket or basketball” Sebastian and Charlie have answered. Challenges 3M have faced have been communicating clearly while playing Follow the Leader but they have persisted through it using the Habit of Mind, Listening with Understanding and Empathy to get the message across. Now let's look at these rising stars' talents. We could maybe learn a few tips and tricks from them !!!

Year 5

5M

In sport 5M were focusing on volleyball. They practiced throwing and catching so that they were prepared to play games. Some of the highlights were when the ball would land on the top of the fence. (They were using the fence as a volleyball net!) Some challenges they faced were running to get the ball and some people were in the way and not paying attention. Year 5 used Habits of Mind such as Persisting and Striving for Accuracy when it was hard.  They were sorted into teams of 5 or 6 that were mixed with boys and girls. Year 5 enjoyed playing volleyball for sport.

5J

In year 5J sport lessons they are trying to master the skill of Volleyball. They are moving quickly to get it over the fence. Year five faced a challenge that there was no net to shoot at but they quickly fixed the problem by using the fence separating the grass area to the basketball court and pushing the ball over the fence. They used a variety of habits of mind to help them play a successful game of Volleyball. The main habits of mind was persistence to keep on trying to master the skill of hitting the ball over the fence.

A problem that they faced when they played the game was trying to spread their hands apart in a Diamond shape for the ball to be caught. Instead of spreading their hands apart they were together in a triangle shape which made the ball harder to catch. When they did spread their hands apart in the diamond shape it made the ball way easier to catch then the triangle shape.

5J quickly discovered that the higher they threw the ball the easier it was to catch. A technique they used was called the spike. The spike is where you push the ball up into the air and then execute with a flick at the end to push the ball even further across the court. Great work 5J!

Year 6

In week 5 of term 3 Year 6 have been bettering their cricket skills. The impact has been positive as year 6 has learnt a lot, improved their skills and enjoyed the sport as well. They Learned a lot about other people in their class. For example, some people didn’t know that some of their peers were quite gifted in this area.

Of course while playing such a game as cricket out of school grounds the students had to focus on their habits of mind strategies. They especially had to manage their impulses. While playing the game Year 6 had to strive for accuracy and apply past knowledge of previous lessons to master the batting skill. They also had to think flexibly and cooperate with her peers. Sometimes they had a disagreement but they all thought flexibly and worked their way around it. Resulting in a great and fun game!
