Apollo Community Report 

The One and Only Ivan

This term the Apollo Community have been reading the novel ‘The One and Only Ivan’. This award winning novel is a true story about a silverback gorilla named Ivan who lived in a cage at a mall, and is written from Ivan's point of view. The students have thoroughly enjoyed the text and we have has rich discussions about Ivan and his life at the mall. 

As part of our learning about, we have applied to reading strategies of critiquing and analysing when reading the text. As part of analysing the text, students looked at the author’s craft and word choice. During critiquing, students gave their opinions on the text, discussing what they enjoyed and didn't enjoy. We used post it notes to record our thoughts when critiquing. Here is an example of how we used the post it notes.
