Icarus Community Report
What an amazing term we have had in the Icarus Community!
Students have worked hard and showcased to their teachers the growth they have made with their learning during our assessment period. At the end of this term, student reports will be released via Compass and parent teacher interviews with be held next term. Please keep an eye out for the notification on how you can access these reports and make a booking with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress.
Here's a brief outline of what our students have learned this month:
Reading
Over the past few weeks, the Icarus Community has been reading the novel ‘The One and Only Ivan’. The book, a fiction text based on a true story of a silverback gorilla, has engaged our students and we have had some wonderful discussions around the many themes in this book. Students have been very interested in learning about the real Ivan and his life. Whilst reading this book, students have also been learning about the reading strategies of critiquing and analysing. When analysing, students looked at the author’s craft and how authors have chosen to write their text and present information. During critiquing, students gave their opinions on books they read and discussed what they enjoyed and didn’t enjoy about them.
Writing
In Writing, students have been learning to write an explanation text. They were given opportunities to research and find relevant information about different types of force. Students were using a template to plan their explanations text.
They were able use modelled structure and language features in their writing. Students explained how and why something occurs and provided details. They enjoyed editing and published their explanation texts using their best handwriting.
Maths
This month, Icarus students explored different types of angles, including acute, obtuse, reflex, straight and right angles. Students created many designs that incorporated variety of angles. Design for robots was a big hit amongst our students. We also focused on the language of chance when ordering likelihood of familiar events from impossible to certain. Finally, we discussed displaying data within pie charts and interpreting these graphs.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students were learning about the relationship between force energy and motion. They have been exploring this concept through creating their own paper roller coasters and marble mazes from resources sourced from home and in the classroom.
SEL
For the past a few weeks, students learned to identify and name problems. They became confident in developing a range of strategies to use in working to solve problems. Another important learning content was focused on identifying a range of strategies used to solve problems. Students made a dice that included a variety of problem-solving strategies. Then, they discussed and evaluated strategies to see if they are a good fit for the problem of their choosing.
We wish all our students and their families a relaxing holiday break and look forward to seeing them all again for a wonderful Term 3.
