Luna Community Report

Term 2, 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a remarkable and busy month filled with engaging activities, valuable learning experiences, and heartwarming displays of resilience from our incredible students.

Reading

This month, our Luna students have been exploring non-fiction books filled with fun facts and information. We've learned all about special features in these books, like the contents page that helps us find what we want to read. We've also discovered amazing diagrams that show us how things work and  photos that bring the words to life. It's been so much fun figuring out how to use these features to better understand what we are reading!

Writing

During our writing topic, we learned about explanation texts. We introduced what are explanation texts, its purpose and the features. Students discussed different topics on how something works or why something occurs. Some examples are: "How does a butterfly grow?", "How does a parachute work?" and choosing their own topics. The writing process was followed where students planned using dot points, wrote sentences using these dot points, wrote the introduction, the explanation, drew a diagram and labeled it, and wrote a fun conclusion. We had integrated some activities from our inquiry unit on Forces, and one activity was to make a parachute. This helped the students to understand from personal experience how the parachute works which then helped them in writing about it.

Have a look at their completed work below:

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about 2D Shapes. We have explored the names of 2D Shapes and investigated many sides 2D Shapes have. Using this knowledge, we created a picture only using circles and squares. Have a look at some of our work below:

We have also been exploring the topic of time and how to use a calendar. Students have experienced looking through calendars and finding an important date to them. Some chose to find their birthday using a full 2023 calendar.

Inquiry/SEL

During our Inquiry lessons we continued looking at the way things move. We experimented with things that float and sink. We made predictions and tested these predictions using things we found in the classroom. We also had a lot of fun designing, making and testing parachutes made from various materials.

In SEL we continued to look at different rules we have inside and outside of the clasrroom, paying particular attention to how we show care for our school. We talked about how we care for our school by respecting our environment and picking up rubbish we find in the playground. We also looked at big and small problems and how we can use our reasoning to solve some of the issues we have at school. We discussed how some  problems are big problems and we may need help from a trusted adult to solve them.

We hope you all enjoy  your break and we look froward to seeing you all again in term 3.
