Argus-Xenica Community Report
Term 2, 2023
Welcome to The Argus/Xenica Community Newsletter, we have arrived at the end of Term 2 and we teachers are proud of the educational and social advancements of the Prep community. We have seen predominant progress in our students in all areas of the curriculum. We hope that the students enjoy their well-earned break and come back rejuvenated and ready to learn.
Reading
In Reading, we are currently continuing to work on Phase 2 sounds. Students are in the process of fully understanding how to blend sounds to create a word. Thus far, we have seen plentiful success in the reading skills of most of our students. We have also started to teach Narratives, specifically the format and foundation of Narratives. We have gone through the different features of Narratives like the problem, the resolution, and the characters in the book. We have seen adequate growth in this section as well. In Term 3, we will begin to go over Information reports.
Writing
Students are showing proficiency in segmenting sounds and writing CVC words as we work on letter-sounds. We are also currently working on our knowledge of narratives learnt in Reading and are applying it in Writing. Students create a simple narrative with all the standard features of a narrative and label all the features of the narrative. We have seen ample success in this realm and are proud of our cohort’s progress. As in Reading, next term we will be honing our knowledge on informational reports and texts alike.
Maths
We are now focusing on an elementary version of subtraction; to assist with this subject, we expose our students to a variety of learning resources and
manipulatives, along with real-life scenarios. We have seen profuse success in this realm. In measurement, students are learning 2D shapes and are applying this knowledge to distinguish and create different shapes. Students are prompted to make different objects and shape-types to refine their knowledge of these shapes. We have seen copious success in this realm and are proud of our students. Next term we will be centring our attention towards multiplication and division.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we learnt about our different senses and the body part we use for each sense. We talked how our senses keep us safe. We explored the environment with enthusiasm using our senses and participated in many fun experiments.
