Students undertaking VET subjects are required to complete 70 hours per year of mandatory work placement in order to fulfil course requirements. Whilst on work placement students should be mindful that they are representing not only themselves but James Busby High School and therefore should ensure that their conduct, attitude and attire is appropriate at all times and meets all standards/requirements. Failure to do so may result in an N award.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to gain good work placement venues for our VET students. Making a good impression on employers not only gives our school a good name, but helps to strengthen and secure the venue for work placement for future VET students. In addition, students must ensure their work placement journal is completed and submit to their class teacher upon their return from work placement. It is also the student’s responsibility to catch up on any school work missed (from all subjects studied) whilst on work placement.

HOSPITALITY
All students who have elected to study Hospitality – Commercial Cookery are required to wear a chef’s uniform and closed-in leather shoes for practical lessons in order to meet Workplace Health and Safety Legislation and ensure the safety of the students. Practical lessons are conducted weekly and are used to determine student competence in a wide variety of industry-specific skills involving food preparation. Participation in practical lessons is a mandatory requirement.
Students who fail to attend and participate in any practical cooking lesson will be required to prepare the item at home and bring it to school to be assessed by their class teacher, together with photographic evidence of the steps taken in the preparation and cooking process.
CONSTRUCTION
Year 11 Construction students have recently completed their mandatory WHITE CARD training with COASTAL OHS SERVICES PTY LTD which has been funded by the school. This training will enable these students to fulfil their mandatory work placement requirements.
Faheem and Naeem Talukder
These two former Year 12 students had studied Construction as part of their HSC in 2022.
As a result of their commendable effort and application during work placement Faheem and Naeem were able to secure carpentry apprenticeships with WESTBOURNE DEVELOPMENTS (one of our host employers). Recent feedback from our workplace provider is that these young men are excelling in their first-year carpentry apprenticeship.
