Backflips Against Bullying

A super busy Term 2 created many amazing opportunities for our students. All Year 7 students attended the Backflips Against Bullying workshop. This interactive workshop delivered a message covering cyber-bullying, harassment, resilience, and real-world consequences of behaviours around bullying. Special thanks to the students and Miss Welfare who literally put their bodies on the line for the show (part of the safe audience participation).

Haka Warriors Program

Our Pasifika Students have engaged in the Haka Warrior Program this term. Each week the students from Years 7 through to Year 12 come together with the facilitators from Blacktown PCYC to work together promoting core values of unity, resilience, self-worth, respect, and identity. It is a fabulous opportunity for these students to come together and build connections as a ‘family’ as they grow on this journey together. 6 students have been selected as Leaders who assist in co-ordination and voice of members in practice, performance, and commitment. Watch this space during Term 3 for a wonderful opportunity to see these students showcase their culture and bond with each other.

Inspire 180 Project

15 of our Year 9 & 11 male students were given the opportunity to work collaboratively with Tony Hoang & Johnny Nguyen from the Inspire 180 Project and Big Heart Big Vision to build on responsibilities, resilience, enhancing their educational opportunities and leadership skills. This 10-week program created meaningful connections between the facilitators and our male students whilst creating positive mindsets, allowing each of the boys to develop their self-awareness. The students engaged with many guest speakers throughout the term including reformed gang members, successful business owners, entertainment producers (Directorzig including a performance by Mistah_Cee & Day1), founders of the Sydney West Riders Foundation, and a barrister.

Our students listened to reformed gang members and their life choices – impacting their teen years and how they were able to make the 180 turn-around by building resilience, communication, working on their mental health and anger management as well as media and financial education, social awareness, teamwork, and leadership. Many thanks to Tony Hoang, Johnny Nguyen, Khoa Do, Yee, Andrew Truong (a former James Busby Student), Vireak Long, Jason (Barrister), Steven Lam and Sam from Sekseed in making this program a memorable and inspirational space allowing our boys to continue their personal growth and education.

Many of these boys took the opportunity to attend Stand Tall Sydney 2023 event which was held at The Aware Super Theatre at the International Convention Centre in at Darling Harbour. Our students were amongst 8000 young people who listened to a host of speakers including Timomatic, Molly Croft, Michael Crossland, Nicho Hynes, Matt Purcell, Derek Rabelo, Craig Johnston and many more. This inspirational event provided the students the opportunity to hear of the speaker’s resilience and strength to make a stand against bullying and keys to motivation to succeed.

Our second outing for the program took us on a workplace tour of the ISA Studios in Waterloo. The boys were then privileged to work with Sam from Sekseed highlighting the importance of feeling and regulating their emotions in a healthy and positive way. The boys were put through their paces undertaking a short physical workout and finishing off with learning to tie a necktie.

The final week was celebrated with a small group graduating from this wonderful program which has made a significant impact on many of our male students. We look forward to working with Tony and Johnny from Inspire 180 Project in the future.

Souths Cares

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are continuing to work with Souths Cares throughout the term. We are extremely grateful for some amazing opportunities created for our students as they connect with their culture through dance.

12 of our students stepped outside their comfort zone and danced at the NRL South Sydney Rabbitohs v Parramatta Eels Indigenous Round. We are so proud of these students who showcased their Indigenous culture through dance in from of 27,000 people. It was another great opportunity to see our students out in the community. Special thanks to Miss Cattanach, Mr Schafer, Miss Davila and Miss Hall for attending and supporting the students at this fabulous event.

Living Out Loud

A small group of Year 9 students attended our Living Out Loud Health Promotion Workshops. This wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with Fairfield Liverpool Youth Health Team creates a fun learning environment covering topics around mental health, healthy and unhealthy relationships, consent and the law, sexual health, and the harmful effects of vaping. This group of Year 9 students engaged in mature conversation and were active learners in these topics. Each of the students in Term 2’s Living Out Loud were rewarded with an ice-skating voucher from Liverpool Catholic Club to celebrate their active participation and enthusiasm.
