Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING MID YEAR - JUNE 2023

Today teachers have been working on mid-year reports for all students. The student reports will be published at the beginning of the last week of term Monday 19th June 2023. We then have three nights of Parent Teacher Interviews to complete this process. The Parent Teacher Interviews will be after school on Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22nd June inclusive. Parent Teacher Interview appointments will be open to parents on Compass from Wednesday 14th June to Monday 19th June 2023 at 3.30 PM. If you are unable to attend during this time, please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a mutually agreeable time.

LITERACY IMPROVEMENT

We have been very excited about the growth of students with regards to their Literacy Results so far this year. Staff are working consistently across the school on our agreed Structured Literacy Instructional Model. We model explicitly directed instruction through programs such as Sounds Write, Spelling Mastery and Heggertys. The development of the proficiencies such as handwriting, spelling/morphology, fluency, daily revue, vocab extension, reading and writing is our focus.

Consider the graph below which has been de-identified for privacy but you can see the enormous progress made in the first 6 months of this year. The grey line represents where you would hope the students to reach by the end of the year level. Most students have already reached that. The students who require extra support receive assistance through our Tutoring program and through targeted funding programs. Well done to all of our students but also to our wonderful teaching and Education Support staff for their great work here. Cathy Gleeson, Literacy Co-Ordinator, made a presentation to School Council this week which was informative and impressive.

We are extremely proud of our students and how far they are progressing. Enrolments for 2024 Foundation students are now open. If you have a child or know of anyone who does please let them know and to contact the school to arrange a school tour and information pack.

YEAR 5 EXCURSION BudjBim - TUESDAY 13TH JUNE 2023

Next Tuesday our Year 5 students will travel to BudjBim, near Tyrendarra. The School-Aboriginal Community Partnership Project has funded this excursion so there is no cost to families. Our students and staff are very fortunate to be visiting BudjBim- a world heritage listed site. Please ensure that you provide consent on Compass.

WORLD HERITAGE LISTING

Budj Bim Cultural Landscape was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in August 2019, for its Outstanding Universal Value.

Located within the Country of the Gunditjmara, an Aboriginal nation in the southwest of Victoria, the property includes the BudjBim Volcano and Tae Rak (Lake Condah), as well as the Kurtonitj component, characterised by wetland swamps, and Tyrendarra in the south, an area of rocky ridges and large marshes. The BudjBim lava flows, which connect these three components, have enabled the Gunditjmara to develop one of the largest and oldest aquaculture networks in the world. Composed of channels, dams and weirs, they are used to contain floodwaters and create basins to trap, store and harvest the kooyang eel (Anguilla australis), which has provided the population with an economic and social base for six millennia.
