Secondary Community News
Lower Secondary (Years 7-8)
Students have been enjoying the 7/8 market as they head into the end of the term. Everyone is excited for the special teacher market next week! The 7/8's have successfully completed travel training to Watergardens. They had fun collecting data on the goods and services they found at the shopping centre and playing on the playground. They have been very busy completing their assessments with a positive attitude. Students have shown enthusiasm when reflecting on their learning. Students are now preparing for their upcoming swimming lessons in week 2 of term 3. We wish you all a very happy and safe holiday! From the 7/8 team
Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)
YEAR 9/10 HEALTH AND FITNESS MONDAYS
Over the last couple of weeks students in Year 9/10 have resumed
normal activities for their Health and Fitness sessions on Monday afternoons.
We have just completed a four-week soccer coaching program conducted by coaches provided by Football Australia.
Students have been given the opportunity to participate in Yoga sessions with Gabi, Just Dance activities with Taleisha, Trampolining with David or a vigorous game with Dante and Ian, which this week was a great basketball match.
We have submitted to Sporting Schools Australia for additional funding for Term 3 in which we hope to offer a four week basketball coaching program.
YEAR 10 VET/SBAT EXCURSION (PT 2) WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE
Year 10 students from 9/10C and 9/10D students attended the Vocational Education Training (VET) and School-Based Apprenticeship Training Program (SBAT).
Students visited several of the facilities and organisations involved in these programs to help them choose which programs they might like to take in Year 11 next year in their VPC years.
STEPS TO WORK PROGRAM
The Steps to Work program is a supported work experience program designed to improve employment outcomes for students with a disability.
In the last few weeks some students in Year 10 were interviewed by Brooke, a disability employment service worker from an organisation called Onemda who are helping deliver the Steps to Employment program. There'll be fortnight sessions to develop employability skills as
they prepare for work experience placement.
The Australian Catholic University will be researching the impact of the program.
Onemda is one of the organisations that has received funding to help improve employment outcomes for young people with disabilities. Their project will help students in:
1. Getting Jobs - Creating opportunities for students with disability to participate in part-time jobs (both paid and unpaid) whilst at school.
2. Working Together – building a framework for collaboration to support students with disability to find and keep a job whilst at school.
The Getting Jobs program will include:
• Linking the student to suitable work opportunities in their local community. Work shifts might be after school, or on weekends.
• Providing any support required by the student to help them participate in their work placement.
• Education workshops for students, families and school around employment and building employability skills.
• Support to the student and their family to access other services and supports that might be needed to help the young person on their employment journey.
• Develop peer support opportunities for young people to learn from and support each other on their employment journey.
• Tailored support will be provided by an Employment Service Connector who will work with the student and their family, school and employer throughout the program.
WORLD OF WORK
Our Café wraps up this week in our final day of service.
The Sales and Marketing team took in an amazing 35 orders for this Thursday (15.06) with around 14 members of staff selecting to dine-in. The Dine-In option is critically important to our program as it gives our servicing team a chance to deal with real customers under real service conditions. Other members of the service team will ensure that take-away deliveries are made on time time to our hungry staff. The Production team have done an incredible job thanks to Yr 9/10 staff members, Sue R and Sandra O. In particular, the efforts of Sandra in keeping production running during Sue’s recent absence has been formidable. Sandra has been ably assisted by stand-out student member Alesha Duncan who has put in an amazing effort in supporting Sandra. Well-done tea, (excuse the culinary pun!)
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED JACKSON X-PRESS-A JOB WELL DONE!
Senior Secondary (VPC/ASDAN)
ASDAN
The work the students’ do in ASDAN is varied and highly differentiated to suit all learning styles. This past couple of weeks we have been focusing on respectful relationships, ‘what makes a good friend’ and how to behave respectfully in the community and at work. We have also continued with our work experience program at Westvale Community Centre; the garden beds are coming along nicely. Students continue to progress well meeting ASDAN outcomes too by completing a display of personal care products.
