Year 6 Specialist News -Term 3

Visual Arts
The Term 3 Unit of Inquiry is called 'Self Portrait' which is a standalone Unit. The Unit focusses on their personal qualities to create a tribute through portraiture and symbolism. Portraits inspired by a variety of artists, from the Archibald Prize.
The Students Participate In
- Using a photo to guide their illustration of a Self-portrait using the grid technique which shows their understanding of the learnt technique, application of tone and detail.
- Confident and considered choice of technique to create a background with a personal symbolic link.
- The overall effect of the final piece- Colour detail, enhancement of background and composition.
- Ceramic Bust detailing facial features and applying their knowledge of portraiture and clay skills.
Physical Education
The term 3 unit we are focusing on is 'How we organise ourselves'.
Focus: Athletics- Distance and Sprint runs, Hurdling, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus and Shot Put. Use these skills to participate in the House Athletics competition and further into District, Division and State competitions if capable.
Students will undertake a Learning Task on, 'How to create a game'. Where they will unpack an array of different invasion games and adapt to suit skill levels. They will organise how the game can be broken down into various skills and develop strategies on how to play the game; what is required to teach/coach these skills to a team and how you organise a group to follow instructions and directions related to this game.
Concepts: Connection: relating the game or skill learnt to play/compete at a higher level with development and coaching from a peer.
Learner Profile: Caring: showing sensitivity towards others as they implement skills and try to teach/coach those skills to their peers. Developing a sense of personal commitment to helping others.
Music
Focus - dance
This term we will learn, create, rehearse and perform ‘Dance’.
Students will be encouraged to work collaboratively with fellow students and to rehearse within time constraints to -
- Learn steps.
- Learn dance sequences.
- Create short dances.
- Perform to peers.
- Several different styles will be covered including Line Dance and Contemporary Free Form.
- Students will view a live performance by Musica Viva called Two Wheeled Time Machine.
- They will also learn a song called 'Words Make the World Go Around' as part of a whole school performance event – Busking for Change. This fund raiser and music event is a National initiative from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
We will continue to touch on Drama, Singing and Music (ukulele)
Library
The children are timetabled weekly, to borrow books from the Library with their classroom teachers. During these borrowing sessions, they will gain a better understanding of Library locations and the borrowing/returning procedures.
The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation.
The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information.
