NAIDOC Week Celebrations Begin

Last week, we started our whole school celebrations of NAIDOC Week. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme recognises and honours the invaluable contributions of First Nations Elders, who hold and pass on the knowledge, culture, and traditions of their communities.

Our students were engaged in many learning experiences across the curriculum to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s history, culture and achievements.

We created a whole school human Aboriginal Flag. Students were asked to wear a coloured top which formed part of a section of the Aboriginal Flag. There was a real buzz of excitement as the photos were being taken!

At our staff meeting last week, we created some beautiful artwork that will form part of a whole school collaborative art project to honour and celebrate Elders in their own lives.

Over the next few weeks we are lucky enough to have First Nations artist Emmy Webbers. Last week she worked with students in Grade 1 and Grade 4 to create beautiful artworks.

Here are some photos of Emily, our First Nations artist working with Grade 1 and Grade 4 students.

The Prep students listened to Emily explain about different artefacts and how they are used by past and present First Nations people. Here are some photos of the Preps exploring the many artefacts that Emily shared with them last Tuesday.

Our celebrations continue next week and we look forward to sharing them next week.
