Daisy Searby Competition
The Year 11 Daisy Searby creative writing competition is named in honour of a former teacher who was passionate about student creativity and writing.
This year, students responded to a visual prompt as part of their unit of study: Crafting Texts.
Former UHS English and Literature teacher, Maureen Cooper judged the students’ work and was impressed with the quality and imagination of pieces of writing. All Daisy Searby Finalists were also invited to participate in a writing workshop with author, Steven Amsterdam.
This year’s winners and highly commended pieces are:
1st - Lestari Ida Bagus, I don’t know who I am
2nd - Will Richter, Shadows
3rd - Miranda Honey, untitled
3rd - Beatrice Guantai, Leaving
Highly Commended - Zayn Rizwan, Allah-Huakbar, Allah-Huakbar
Author Workshop Reflection - Will Richter
I was lucky enough to attend a writing workshop with author Steven Amsterdam. It was an incredible experience to get to learn from an incredible writer such as Amsterdam and we were taught many innovative techniques, styles and methods of writing throughout the session which I can't wait to implement into my own writing. I would like to thank the school, and especially the English department, for putting on the event and I would also like to thank Steven Amsterdam himself for giving his time to run the session.
