Kate Burridge Lecture

This term, students doing VCE English Language listened to renowned Australian linguist Kate Burridge speak. Kate is a Professor of Linguistics at Monash University and Fellow of both the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.

She spoke to us about the history of English in Australia and how and when it became Australian English, as well as the influences and impacts upon Australian English that has led it to being what it is today. Some of these influences that Kate touched upon included prestige, taboo language, identity, stigma and the populous of Australia that led to Australian English’s evolution. It was phenomenal to hear Kate talk about Australian English and Linguistics and it was an exceptional experience for all - students and teachers alike!
