Robotics Team
We are currently running a Robotics team at Uni High, started in term 2 this year. The goal was to create a robot before the winter holidays in time for the FIRST Robotics Competition. The competition required us to move cones and cubes from one side of a pitch, about the size of a basketball court, to the other and line them up. We could also score extra points by balancing our robot on a moving platform. We scored points with two other robots and competed against three other robots.
For a few weeks after suggesting the idea to Ms Costelloe, the teachers were not too sure about it but eventually we got the team started. Karolla and Matt from the First Robotics Competition (FRC) and Mr Baxter came to help us build a robot for the competition every Wednesday after school. The robot is about 1 metre by 1 metre, it has 6 wheels, is wirelessly controlled and named Bob. We were able to finish the robot just before the Competition started.
The competition was at Blackburn High School from 30th of June to the 2nd of July. On the first day we got our act together and practised working with the robot. On the second day we started the qualifying matches to let the other teams and judges see how good we were. On the last day we actually started competing. We worked with three other teams to achieve 2nd place. We also got the best Rookie Team Prize. Over the course of the competition the other teams did nothing but help us; one team actually gave us a part of their robot.
If you’ve ever wanted to create a terminator, a bipedal weapons system, Roko’s Basilisk, bring a new age of technological advancement, or just tinker with cool gadgets join the Robotics Club.
