Secondary

Dear Families
When people think about mental health, they can often think of mental illness and the stigma associated with it. Encouraging conversations and raising awareness about mental health leads to a greater understanding of the occurrence and impact of mental illness as well as building awareness on how to support mental health and wellbeing. The link between physical and mental health is strong, as is feeling connected to the people around us. The Push-Up Challenge is an initiative that over the past six years has become the largest mental health and fitness event in Australia, bringing people in workplaces and schools together for a common cause. Conducted during June, participants around Australia are challenged to complete 3,144 push-ups as a spotlight on the number of lives lost to suicide in 2021. Led by Charley Laver, Wellbeing Captain and Push-Up Challenge Student Ambassador, the Year 12 Student Representative Council have been promoting the Push-Up Challenge among Secondary students. So far, our collective effort has been 18,489 push-ups! Congratulations to Charley and fellow Student Ambassadors, Kaia and Anna, the SRC and all students involved in this worthy raising awareness campaign.
Congratulations to our ACC Girls’ Hockey team for their gritty performance at this week’s carnival, coming second to Sacred Heart. Wishing the boys’ team every success at their carnival on Monday.
We are also playing for 13 Winter NAS Premierships next week, an outstanding achievement for all players and coaches this term.
The Interhouse Homeroom Art Challenge began this week, with Homerooms creating a collaborative work of art to recreate and interpret a famous still-life painting in 3D. We look forward to the designs that will be judged at the beginning of next term with works contributing to House points.
The Music Camp is a highlight of the Music Program, providing students with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with each other, and we wish all Music students and staff an enjoyable and creative experience this weekend at Fairbridge.
Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews, Wednesday 19 July
Our next Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 19 July (8:30 am to 6:00 pm) as a valuable opportunity to discuss academic progress for students in Years 7 to Year 12. Secondary Teachers will be available for a combination of online and face-to-face interviews. More information regarding these interviews will be provided by Greg Moran, Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning.
Mobile Phone Expectations
The College recognises that the use of mobile technology is part of modern life and acknowledges parents may wish their child to carry a mobile device for personal safety reasons. The right, however, of a student to have access to a device at school, particularly a mobile phone, must be balanced with the responsibility to use it appropriately. We also believe in the importance of face-to-face communication which builds positive relationships and interactions between students and their friends while they are at school.
Recently, there has been a rise in students having their phones on them in class and at break times. The result being that optimal engagement in learning has been compromised by off-task behaviour and, at times, inappropriate and disrespectful behaviour towards others whilst using their phones. Recess and lunch should be invaluable opportunities for students to connect face-to-face or participate in alternative activities such as sports. In support of student wellbeing, greater engagement in class and positive peer relationships, the College is refocusing its efforts that students do not engage with their mobile phones during the school day.
The current mobile phone expectations are that students keep their phones securely locked in their lockers for the duration of the school day (8:30am to 3:10pm). Students should not have their phones on them (with the exception that they have been given permission to use their phones for educational or medical purposes) during class time, recess or lunch. Students purchasing items from the Canteen can do so using cash, their Smartrider or a debit card. Consequences for inappropriate use of mobile phones include confiscation of the phone in the first instance and further infringements for recurrent inappropriate use.
Expectations and consequences will be reiterated to students over the coming weeks and staff will be making a concerted effort to facilitate these expectations in the new term. Students requiring a new Smartrider to make Canteen purchases can order this free of charge during the next two weeks at the Library. Further instructions regarding the use of Smartriders for Canteen purchases can be found here.

On Friday 2 June, the Year 11 Dinner Dance was held at the Bendat Basketball Centre in Floreat. The students relished the opportunity to dance the night away and share good memories with each other throughout the evening. Special thanks to our Audio Visual Team led by Jeff Jansen and assistants Jack Purkiss and Patrick Boere (who also doubled as the photographer), DJ Fake (Steven Vincent) who provided great tunes throughout the night, and all the College staff for supporting a great night.

Id Quod Volo
On Tuesday 6 June the Year 11 students participated in Id Quod Volo at the College. Id Quod Volo - ‘that which I desire the most’ is a leadership program focused on the model of servant leadership and service. The students had the privilege of listening to Fr Tony Lusvardi, our illustrious Jesuit Priest visiting from Rome, who shared his amazing story of service and Ignatian leadership.
Due to the weather the students did not move off campus to complete their service activities, however, thanks to the outstanding House Coordinators, Ms Trina Lane and Mrs Janeen Murphy, alternative arrangements were made and students thoroughly enjoyed the active opportunities to display servant leadership and service. Students also engaged with guest speaker Adrian Alaberg, who presented a public speaking workshop on ‘Finding Your Voice’. Thank you to everybody involved in making the day a special occasion for the students.

As part of this celebration, we are excited to welcome the Fare Go Food Truck back to the College. The Fare Go Food Truck is a social enterprise staffed by refugees and asylum seekers.
You can order a Fattoush salad, a special Middle Eastern salad with toasted bread, mixed greens and pickles with hummus and tahini dressing. Served with either Persian Lamb Kotlets (patties) or Falafel.

Year 7 Japanese - United Nations Fashion Parade
Year 7 Japanese students present at the JTC United Nations Fashion Parade. Over the past term our Year 7 students of Japanese have been busy preparing to present their partner at the United Nations Fashion Parade.
Students were required to introduce their partner, giving their age, nationality, favourite food, drink and sport. In addition, they had to describe what they were wearing…all in Japanese!
The students were very imaginative with their new international identities, from Albert Einstein to Super Mario and Luigi.
Well done, Year 7 Japanese.
