Notice board refresh!

Our sustainability notice board has had a makeover! Since the office was painted, we have made a new notice board, full of up-to-date information of all thing’s sustainability related at Solway. You can also read all about our Green Team and what their goals are in the Green Team this year.

Our collection bins are empty and ready for recyclable items. We are currently collecting:

  • Printer Cartridges
  • Mobile phones
  • Bread tags
  • Small electronic items
  • Batteries
  • Pens and markers (run by Terrcycle, please check the post below to see what you can recycle)

PLASTIC FREE JULY - WHAT ARE WE DOING AT SOLWAY?

Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. As a responsible and passionate 5 Star Sustainable school,  we are eager to be part of the solution and lead by example. At Solway, we will be running the idea of  "SOLWAY IS A NATIONAL PARK," to encourage students to think about how much plastic we use, and how much plastic gets left around Solway.

This initiative will run from Monday, July 17th to Friday, July 21st, and I encourage every member of our school community to actively participate. During our designated "National Park" week, we kindly request that all staff and students take any plastic waste home with them instead of using the bins on school grounds. This approach aligns with the principles followed in our cherished National Parks, where we strive to leave no trace of our presence, except for compost (our beloved worms delight in it).

To visually document the transformative impact of our efforts, our dedicated Green Team will capture "before" and "after" photos of the bins and the school yard. These images will serve as a powerful testament to the positive change we can achieve when we work together.  We encourage all staff and students to participate in our National Park project!

Little Miss and Mr Men

In Year 1/2, learners have not only gained a wealth of knowledge about sustainable practices in Term Two but have also showcased their creativity by crafting their very own Mr. Men and Little Miss books based on their newfound understanding.

In these delightful books, our Year 1/2 students have woven imaginative tales featuring eco-conscious characters such as Mr and Little Miss Heater. Through their engaging storylines and vibrant illustrations, they have conveyed important messages of sustainability, empowering their readers to make conscious choices and act responsibly towards the environment.

Our older students eagerly shared their pivotal knowledge, while the Preps listened attentively, absorbing every bit of information. Witnessing the interactions between these two year levels was an incredible experience, as it exemplified the power of peer learning and the transmission of essential sustainability principles across different age groups.

We couldn't be prouder of our Year 1/2 students for their dedication, creativity, and commitment to spreading awareness about sustainable practices. Their accomplishments serve as a reminder that even at such a tender age, our students can become change-makers and make a positive impact on our planet.

Climate Change book

During mindfulness time, The Green Team took the initiative to read "The Climate Change Book" by Polly Marsden to their peers in Prep to Year Two. Their commitment to environmental sustainability and leadership shone through as they engaged the younger students in a thoughtful discussion about climate change and its impact on our planet.

The Green Team members have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills by fostering a sense of curiosity among their peers, encouraging them to ask engaging questions and explore the importance of taking action to protect the environment. The presence of The Green Team during mindfulness time has been met with excitement and admiration from the younger students. We look forward to continuing this throughout the year.
