Year 7 & 8 All School's Touch Football

On Thursday 24 October two boys teams and one girls team competed in the NSW All Schools Touch Football North West Championships at Gipps Street Playing Fields Tamworth. Teams from Tamworth and the wider region of Narrabri and Quirindi competed on the day.

The girls teams and the Year 7 boys team improved each game and were competitive against well drilled touch teams. The Year 8 boys team had a lot of experienced Rugby League and Oztag players and they were able to utilise these skills before advancing to the grand final. In the grand final they came up against Narrabri High School where the boys were on top for most of the game. Narrabri had the advantage however, of more reserves and finished stronger coming out 7 to 6 winners in a great game. Congratulations to all players who represented the College proudly. Their behaviour, teamwork and sportsmanship were commendable. A big thank you to Mrs Tanya Laird, Mr Bernie Williams and Mr Shaun Nichols for coaching the teams on the day. Thank you to the Year 10 and 11 students who helped coach the teams and referee on the day. Thank you for Touch Football NSW for running a great tournament and for Tamworth Touch Football for operating the canteen on the day.

NSW CCC Junior Basketball

On Sunday 27 October 4 teams travelled to Sydney for the NSW Junior Basketball Championships. All teams had been training hard in the lead up to the championships and were keen to put their best foot forward.

All teams were well drilled, strong and tall. The Year 7 and 8 boys were physically smaller than most of their opponents but they made up for this in courage and determination.  The boys played some great basketball but their shooting did not quite have the accuracy required and the opposition were let off the hook. On the second day of competition all games were knockout games and whilst the boys were knocked out of the competition the opportunity to develop skills, improve and work as a team was appreciated.

The Year 9 and 10 boys had some talented players but had to cope with an injury early in the competition. The boys were competitive and had opportunities but couldn’t quite get there against strong opposition.

The girls had prepared well for the competition and on the knockout day went into the second division finals confident of doing well. These beliefs proved well founded with an emphatic 65-3 quarter final win followed by a closer 34-27 win in the semi-final. Unfortunately in the grand final the girls lost despite playing well and can consider themselves a little unlucky.

The Year 9 and 10 girls advanced to the division one finals. Whilst the girls lost 46-19 they should be proud of their efforts against quality opposition.

A big thank you to all parents who travelled to support our teams, help on the benches and encourage our students. To the coaches Paul Hobson (Year 7 and 8 boys), Emma Higgins (Year 7 and 8 girls), Troy Jefferies (Year 9 and 10 girls) and Neil Wood (Year 9 and 10 boys) thank you for giving up your time to coach and train our players, without your valuable support these events would not be possible. To Carol Rickard thank you for helping coordinate all the teams and for your continued support of MCC Basketball. A big thank you to Mrs Natahlia Bryant and Mr Mark Falkemire, who as well as giving up their Sunday, supported the teams and assisted with managing the teams on their overnight stays. All the students involved represented the College in a fine manner showing sportsmanship, excellent behaviour and courtesy during the trip.

Year 7 & 8 League Tag

On Tuesday 29 October the girls Year 7 and 8 league tag team played the Hunter region winners Muswellbrook High School in Champion of Champion series at Scully Park Tamworth. Both teams,  having won their regions, came to the game with talented players and great athletes. The game was fast paced and free flowing. At the end of regular time the scores were level. Muswellbrook finished on top in an entertaining game. The girls were great representatives for the College and showed wonderful teamwork, sportsmanship and conduct throughout the day. A big thank you for Mrs Tanya Laird for again volunteering to coach the girls and support sport in the College.

Year 7-9 Berg Shield Cricket

On Thursday 31 October the Year 7-9 Berg Shield Cricket played their first round match against St Joseph's of Aberdeen. McCarthy won the toss and sent St Joseph’s in to bat. For a total of 139. There was some good bowling especially from Ben who picked up 2-19 off his 4 overs, Will collected 1 for 20 off 2 overs, Kilian 1 for 13 off 3, Brady 1-27 off 4 overs and Brendan 1 for 6 off one over. The boys improved throughout the game and did well to keep the opposition to a manageable total. In reply, a steady loss of wickets and inability to sustain partnerships made the chase difficult. Some good fielding from St Joseph's and confusion in running between wickets saw two unfortunate run outs. Well done to St Joseph’s Aberdeen who advance in the competition. A big thank you to Mr Geoff Denton and Mr Tim Godden for coaching the team as well as umpiring.
