Around The Primary

Dear Parents,

Next Friday 17 March we are celebrating Primary House Day. This involves the students participating in activities to learn about the founders of John XXIII (Pope John XXIII, Mary Ward, Ignatius Loyola)and to commemorate the House to which they will belong throughout their time at the College.

The format of Primary House Day includes:

9.00am                   'House Day' Mass - All parents are welcome to join us in the Chapel

10:30am                 Students to visit the Year 6 Monster Cake Stall

11.00am                 House Day activities

12.30pm                 Lunch (BYO)

1pm onwards      Fun and Fitness Activities (Years 3-6)

Suitcase Circus Show and Workshop (PP-Year 2)

On Friday the students are required to wear their House shirt, sports shorts and school hat. They will need to bring their lunch and water bottle.

As part of our celebrations for Primary House Day, our Year Six students are holding a 'Monster Cake Stall' to raise funds for Project Compassion.

The children are welcome to bring along a gold coin/s (prices range from 50c to $2.00) to buy a special treat for morning tea.

On this day our normal nutrition guidelines are relaxed but parents may like to provide instructions on the day for their children regarding their purchases. If you prefer you are welcome to send along a snack for your child to enjoy at recess rather than making a purchase at the cake stall.

Congratulations to Miss Graves and the students from 5G for sharing some pearls of wisdom about resiliency. Here at John XXIII we continue to work closely with children to help them as they navigate their way through the ups and downs of school life. We assist children to maintain perspective, to ‘shrug off’ the little things and be proactive in regards to seeking assistance and support in dealing with any bigger issues that may be troubling them. Please take some time to read the attached article as parents play such a vital role in building resilience in children.

Building Resilience

This week Michael Grose offers a really great article on helping children change their perspective when things go wrong. As much as we would always like to protect our kids from difficult situations  it is not always possible or desirable . What we can do is help them to cope well when things don’t go their way and use these situations as opportunities to empower children by teaching them the social skills needed  to create positive outcomes. At a workshop recently Donna Cross from the Telethon Institute reiterated how important it was to learn problem solving skills in childhood. Parents and adult care givers can be instrumental in helping children to develop optimistic ways of understanding challenges thus helping them to see them as temporary and in the most part solvable. If I can be of any assistance with this or you have any concerns about your child please don't hesitate to contact me by email: murphy.anne@johnxxii.edu.au  or phone 9383 0469.

Sports News

Last Thursday evening, J College Primary School held its Years 3 to 6 Inter-house Swimming Carnival at Claremont Pool.

In warm conditions the children participated with great skill, enthusiasm and tremendous sportsmanship.

The winning house this year was Koolyangarra (298 pts) who narrowly edged out Ward House (266 pts) Loreto finished 3rd (252 pts), 4th was St Louis (214 pts). Loyola (212 pts) and Campion House (170pts) filled 5th and 6th positions.

It was really pleasing to see such a large number of spectators who gave the swimmers fantastic support throughout the event. A special mention to the House Captains who did a wonderful job. A big thank you to all the officials who made the night so enjoyable.

Next Tuesday, 14 March the College will compete in the IPSHA Inter-School Swimming Carnival at Newman College.  Good luck to our school team!
