Term 2, Week 1 Snapshot

Welcome to Home Learning!

We have put together a slide deck explaining our approach to Grade 6 Home Learning for the beginning of Term 2. In addition to the class specific Google Classroom groups, we have also made a Grade 6 Cohort group. Students will access all plans and tasks for Home Learning via the Grade 6 Cohort Google Classroom. If they haven't already done so, students all need to join this Google Classroom using the Class Code: 4ghoop5. However, specific tasks are to be submitted through the students' own class Google Classroom.

English

Reading

This year, BPS has a focus on Reading. So far this year, Grade 6 have specifically been focusing on the skills required for summarising and making connections. We will keep working on these skills, and begin to learn new skills. As part of our guided reading work, we have been reading Running Wild, by Michael Morpurgo. If you are able to access a copy of this text (an eBook, or hard copy), this would be very much appreciated and will help us continue our work.

Writing

So far this year, Grade 6 have been practising a variety of writing skills. We have written a Formal Letter and a Narrative text. Term 2 will see the shift to a focus on Information Reports. This ties in nicely with our new Unit of Inquiry: Taking Action. Within this unit of work, students will be focusing on research skills, especially how to search for accurate information and how to pull information from multiple sources to create their own information report. We will be looking not only at the content of Information Reports, but the structure as well.

Students will work towards writing a chronological report based on The Life of Charles Dickens and their own research.  During Week 2, students will order and organise key events and information, creating a timeline of Charles Dickens life.

Mathematics

In numeracy lessons, Grade 6 have been focusing on Place Value, decimal numbers and using a range of mental mathematical strategies to solve problems using the four operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.) We started looking at the Singapore Method in class to help support this learning. Term 2 will begin with reviewing and focusing on three-dimensional shapes.

Students can continue to work through personal goals using My Numeracy. Access to additional mathematics work can be found through Mathletics.

Unit of Inquiry

Students started the year focusing on the Central Idea of 'Leaders Shape Communities'. They inquired into how government systems work, the impact of leaders, and how people decide on leaders. Students researched the skills and values leaders possessed and how the different types of government systems work around the world. This term, students will work on a new unit of inquiry -  'Sharing the Planet'. During this unit, students will learn skills and strategies for conducting effective research, using the idea of Taking Action as a focus.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students through their iNewsletter which can be accessed from the link the Specialists will send out.
