Cultural Diversity Week

Cultural Diversity Week

Fun, Colour and Food! What a fantastic week Cultural Diversity week is at Staughton College. It gives me such pride to see our EAL students and teachers working together to promote the diversity that exists within our school. Watching the rhythmic cultural performances on Monday was incredible. The fashion parade on Tuesday was pumping and showcased an array or gorgeous traditional dresses from both staff and students. They strutted their stuff all along the cat walk to a selection of world music played by DJ Will. Wednesdays much anticipated ‘Tastes of the World’ was a sensory delight with a selection of traditional dishes prepared by our EAL students for the enjoyment of our wider school community.

The dedicated EAL team of staff and students are to be commended on their awesome effort over this very exciting week. Special thanks to Ms. Medina and Ms. Rozynski for all their time, effort and co-ordination of this fantastic celebration of diversity here at Staughton.

I am so proud of all of the EAL students who have made Cultural Diversity Week amazing.  All of the practice, preparation and dedication from the weeks leading up really paid off. The dancers and models looked beautiful in their cultural outfits. The students who cooked the different dishes for ‘Taste of the World’ did an incredible job. You all worked together and made the whole experience wonderful! Thanks to the staff who contributed their time to help and participate during all of the events. A huge thanks to Ms Medina who worked tirelessly to ensure that the week ran flawlessly.  It’s great to see our school come together to celebrate Cultural Diversity.

KELLY ROZYNSKI

EAL Coordinator

When asked, the EAL students had this to say about the week-long celebration:

"I like when we do modeling because I like how all the Samoan girls dress up. They're so pretty and look so cool, and even the teachers, too.  When we were doing cooking, it was cool because I like how we made all the different food around the world, and I liked our performance day, too."

Jacinta Leasi

"I participated in cooking. It was great. We cooked pest pasta, African stew, sapasui, and a Philippine dish (kaldereta). I helped with cleaning, organising the food for everyone, and grabbing the ingredients for our dishes. I really like how Maryan, Malou, and I worked together because it was very quiet and we were really fast."

Keeritta Toafa

"Next year, I want to do this again with more activities and different dishes from other countries."
