Sleep Clinic

Sleep Clinic
The Year 10 Psychology class was lucky enough to have Julie, a sleep scientist from Epworth Sleep Clinic in Richmond, visit on Wednesday.
Students were given an in-depth presentation on sleep, sleep stages, and how sleep scientists measure sleep to help diagnose and treat sleep disorders. Joel Mitchener bravely volunteered to be the classes test subject. He was connected and fitted with devices such as an EEG, EMG, and EOG to measure his bodily responses as well as brain wave patterns. Joel was asked to try and sleep for around 20 minutes while the rest of the class monitored his heart rate, muscle tension, eye movements and brain wave patterns. To Joel’s credit, he managed to reach Stage 2 NREM Sleep whilst in the class break out room.
Overall, students were able to see how sleep is researched and gain a much more in-depth understanding of sleep through interactive, hands on activities.
Mrs. Occhipinti and the Year 10 Psychology class would like to thank Julie and the Epworth Sleep Clinic for their engaging incursion.
