Literacy Week Reflection

During Week 2 we celebrated literacy week. This was an opportunity as a school to celebrate all things reading, writing and speaking. As a school we will continue to work towards our 2019 goal ‘To Build a Culture of Reading Across the School’.
There were lunchtime activities and competitions across the week including the Amazing Race, A Spelling Bee, Staff vs. Student Debate and literacy board games. The winners for these competitions were:
The Amazing Race
Teams raced around the school finding clues and answering literacy based questions to win. The highlight was definitely seeing students from all year levels trying their hand at rapping lines from Dr Seuss!
Winners - Kaley Roe, Monique Chilcott and Savannah Reading (Year 9)
2nd Place - Jess Mitrevski, Emily Medllicott and Ethan Sortino (Year 12)
3rd Place - Omar Malouk and Bradley Peters (Year 8)
4th Place - Tess, Belis Uwingabiye and Sumeyo Osman (Year 9)
The Spelling Bee
We had a great crowd and participation for the Spelling Bee. Students competed in year level groups and winners were able to spell challenging words suitable to their year level.
Year 7 winner: Waleed Chaudry
Year 8 winner: Crystal Bramley
VCE winner: Emily Brady
Staff vs. Student Debate
This year the students were champions of the debate. The student team, made up Kaley Roe, Jazzie Donnelly and Ivy Nielsen, argued the affirmative side for the topic ‘Should children's books deal with issues like politics, race and sexual orientation?’ The teacher’s team was made up of Riley Beech, Maylene Sutherland (best speaker) and Jane Dillon. It was a challenging and thought provoking debate, well done to everyone for researching, preparing and delivering some excellent ideas.
Writing competition winners will be announced next week!
