Year 10 Health and Human Development Excursion

HHD

On Thursday, the 19th of May, the Year 10 Health and Human Development class attended the Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) program at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, City Campus.

The P.A.R.T.Y. program is designed to show students first-hand some of the tragic consequences that can occur if they participate in risk-taking behaviour, as well as the choices they can make to avoid trauma and injury.

Across the day, students were given the opportunity to participate in the following practical sessions:

  • Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department clinical scenarios with a resuscitation doll (led by nurses)
  • Physiotherapy activities
  • Occupational Therapy home disability simulation (students were encouraged to attempt basic activities of daily living such as getting in the bath or using the toilet whilst in a wheelchair or splints/braces)
  • Orthotics/prosthetics demonstration, where students were encouraged to try on splints, braces and supports, and to handle prosthetic limbs.
  • Speech Pathology activities including memory and speech exercises, tracheostomy demonstration, and an opportunity to view a vitamised hospital diet and to experience feeding another person.

The students were also taken on tours of hospital departments, including:

  • Emergency Department & Trauma Centre
  • Intensive Care Unit and Helipad
  • Trauma/Orthopaedic Ward
  • Physiotherapy Department
  • Occupational Therapy Department

Students had the opportunity on these tours to meet and hear patients’ stories.

A huge thank you must go to members of the Wellbeing Team who came on this excursion with us, Sharyn, Julie and Mike.

“The program taught me that you should always think about a situation you’re going to put yourself through because you never know what the outcome of your decision will be.” Kerry V.

“The best part of the day was meeting the patients from these accidents; although it was a harsh reality I definitely learnt from it.” Chris S.

“All up I think it was a great experience and one that I will never forget.” Jess B.
