A Roundtable Discussion on Social Cohesion in a Multicultural Society

On the 20th of May, I had the opportunity to attend a roundtable discussion on social cohesion in a multicultural society held by the Australian Psychologist’s Society (APS) in the city. I was the guest of Ms. Colleen Turner, the coordinator for VICSEG New Futures Western Region Area.

They talked about how, in the media, journalists talk about one group and how that can cause people in the community to form a stereotype based on how people from a particular cultural background are portrayed.

We spoke about practical actions, like how the APS can send more psychologists to help young people in schools. Also, to communicate to news outlets, like the popular newspaper The Herald Sun, about the effects for the community of what they publish. We even considered how the APS could create their own media stories.

I had the opportunity to meet some really nice people who have contributed greatly to the community. There were all kinds of psychologists present, such as forensic psychologists and peace psychologists. They were thinking of making an actual group of psychologists that solely research multicultural cohesion.

I also got the chance to meet a criminologist, who talked to me about pathways into law enforcement and criminology. I had the chance to meet the president of the APS, Mr. Mike Kyrios, as well.

The day turned out really well. Even the food was really great – it came from different cultures, and was cooked at the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre (ASRC).
