Principal's Report

Staughton Community

We strongly value bringing our community together, for both work and celebration, and this week certainly was not an exception.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Year 12 Theatre Studies performance of Don Zolidos’s send-up of reality TV and young adult fiction, ‘Dystopia! The Hungry Maze Game Of Divergent Death’. Theatre Studies productions are different from our whole school productions – they have much fewer resources and less time – and students fill all roles (both onstage and off) as part of their assessment. I was very impressed with the way our Theatre Studies students have collaborated to pull the show together; it was a great night and I was very proud of their performances. I would like to thank the teacher of the class, Grace Hawke, for all her hard work leading up to the performance.

I was recently invited into the Youth Empowerment Process (YEP) class to hear students explain their term projects. Community mindedness was evident, as students explained how their projects aimed to help others, both inside and outside the school. Many of the projects involve fundraising events within our school and I have challenged all of the groups to ensure my participation in each one. If they are able to do this, I have promised the school will also chip in for each fundraising project. The YEP teacher, Hayley Clancy, has done a fantastic job of mentoring these students to develop their projects.

This Friday we had our annual Staughton Athletics Carnival. This year our House Captains have been exceptional in motivating and organising students in their houses. The Athletics Carnival is a fun day for our school community and also incorporates some fundraising, via a barbecue run by VCAL students. I would like to congratulate our school community for their participation and enthusiasm in getting into the spirit of the day. In particular, I would like to congratulate Danielle Cook for an enormously successful first Athletics Carnival as Sports Coordinator.
