DIDGERIBONE PERFORMANCE – RECONCILIATION WEEK
Castlemaine Secondary College recently hosted a famous Didjeribone Player Tjupurru as a part of the Mt Alexander Shire Reconciliation Week program. A didjeribone is an Australian made designed instrument fusing the elements of the didgeridoo and trombone.
Approximately 1000 students witnessed the performance which included our year 7 & 8 classes, music and Aboriginal students. Kaylah Fisher Nelson and Ruby Pender Hodgson opened the 2 separate performances with a Welcome to Country.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the performances from Castlemaine North Primary, St Mary s Primary and Campbells Creek Primary. There was a range of digeridoo sounds which combined highly technical engineered music equipment. The show was highly engaging and interactive and included a range of indigenous to modern varieties of music, cultural art expressions and a range of sound effects.
The show was attended by Auntie Julie and many of our own staff who were able to experience a musical, educational and cultural experience relating to some of Tjupurru’s own life stories. Tjupurru tours the world and has performed at various National and International events. This has included the Winter Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, various international festivals and the Sydney Opera House.
Due to the success of the performance, many other schools and organisations in the region are keen for him to return to perform again in the future.

Refugee Week
Refugees to Australia have some amazing stories to tell. As part of Refugee Week we were privileged to welcome to the Library Nicola Philp from Apollo Bay and local author Laura Keogh, who have written children’s books on refugee themes. Nicola and Laura were very giving of their time; discussing the process of writing and how they approached the topic of ‘refugees’, as well as answering numerous questions. Afterwards we shared some delicious treats made by the students.
