Future Problem Solving Program Award Winners
Dee Broughton, Talent Development and Enrichment Coordinator
As part of the Talent Development and Enrichment program at Kilvington, students from Junior and Senior School had the opportunity to participate in the Future Problem Solving Program of Australia (FPSP) this year.
FPSP is a nationally recognised competition that requires students to research competition-set topics that may pose problems for society in the future. The students analyse the ethical, environmental, social, and economic consequences of these trends and develop possible solutions, and in doing so, develop the critical and creative thinking skills that are so important today.
One group of students focused on the Scenario Writing division of FPSP. This is a short story writing competition with set topics that raised challenges and problems for society now and in 20 years’ time. The competition challenges and extends students who are talented writers and fosters critical and creative thinking.
We are thrilled that three of our students achieved great success in this year’s competition. Year 6 student Victoria Hu was awarded 2nd place in Australia in the Junior Division, Year 5 student Elijah Slavinskis was awarded 4th place in Australia in the Junior Division and Year 8 student Sarah Yeo was awarded 5th in Australia in the Middle Division.
Congratulations to these students, and to all who participated in the program. For our Junior School students, this was the first time they had participated in what is a complex and rigorous program, so it is commendable that they have done so well!
Sarah, Elijah and Victoria attended the National Finals dinner at Monash University, Clayton on 19 October to receive their awards. The students and their parents had a fantastic night celebrating their achievements.
We look forward to our students taking up the FPSP challenge again next year!
'Swannie' Awards
Congratulations to Elisabeth Yeo and William Douglas for winning the 2018 'Swannie' Awards, presented at MLC last Friday.
A 'Swannie' is awarded to the highest scoring speaker across a region, and of over 10,000 debaters in Victoria this year, less than 100 Swannies are recognised.
An impressive achievement from two of our students!
