Celebrating NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Every year there is a different theme. This year’s them is - Always Was. Always will Be. The theme has been developed to shine a focus on the length of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander occupation of Australia.

This is a great opportunity for all of us to reflect on what we currently understand about our shared history so that we can better understand current perspectives and move towards a better future.

Picture books are a powerful way to provide our children with a window into a life different to their own. Our library has a wonderful collection of books available that teachers use to prompt and support discussions that build empathy and understanding.

Our teachers recommend books such as:

  • Wilam, A Birrarung Story by Aunty Joy Murphy,
  • Welcome to Country by Aunty Joy Murphy,
  • Stolen Girl byTrina Saffioti,
  • Young Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe
  • Nyuntu Ninti by Bob Randall.

If you are looking for a way to develop your own understanding, we also highly recommend Dark  Emu by Bruce Pascoe as a starting point for adults.
