Student Musings

From Junior School

It was an enthusiastic return as we welcomed back our Year 7s to on-site classes this week. The fine weather was certainly welcome and helped ease any tensions upon return.

Students were provided opportunity to reconnect with their peers and teachers by completing various ice breaker activities, with some students meeting their new teacher for semester-based subjects for the first time face-to-face.

Students worked together in a scavenger hunt designed to refamiliarize themselves with the school grounds and also provide an opportunity to visit the brand new Senior School building.

There have been various lunch time activities on offer this week including board games, Kahoot quizzes organised by some of the Year 7 Ambassadors, small group challenges, and dance contests. Ms Boutsikakis and Mr Ingleton organised various outdoor physical activities such as skipping, frisbee, and a friendly kick of the footy between staff and students, along with music playlists which provided a festive feel to lunchtimes. We’ve been quite impressed with the resilience and endeavour shown by the students in their return to on-site classes so far and we look forward to also welcoming back the Year 8s to the Junior School in the coming weeks.

Dollars and Sense

Suncorp ESSI Money Challenge 2020

Year 10 students studying Dollars and Sense took part in the Suncorp ESSI Money Challenge, an online financial literacy game for Australian secondary school students.  ESSI stands for Earning, Saving, Spending and Investing through game play based on a 'virtual reality'.

The game allows students to practise real life financial transactions and experience the consequences in a safe, fun and challenging way. Students have to make decisions about how to earn money - apply for jobs and plan a career path, managing their wages, choosing and managing banking products and budgeting, managing living expenses and credit responsibilities, buying and selling online and setting investment goals, completing risk assessment and planning for retirement by creating superannuation plans and strategies.

Congratulations to Elley Steenhuizen who over the 26 virtual weeks used her financial skills to earned a fantastic $35,634.65 to finish just outside the top 10 in Australia for her age category.  Well done Elley.

Year 7 ACE class excited to return to school

The Year 7 ACE students were so excited returning to school on Monday morning October 12. They spent the first lesson in Geography reconnecting with each other, and completed a Scavenger Hunt around the school, to refamiliarize themselves with the school environment, and discover the new Senior School building.

During remote learning, they have been so conscientious in the completion of their work, but returning to face-to-face classes this week has been fantastic for them.

It was lovely to see their ‘smiling eyes’ (behind their masks), and we just had to seize a photo opportunity in a very unique year.

Year 7 English

Our Year 7s told us they missed collaborating with their peers most during Remote Learning, so we made sure English was full of collaboration on their first day back! Working together on mapping the narrative structure of Little Red Riding Hood! We are so happy to have them back on site! ☺️
