Health and Well-being

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Schools play a key role in providing a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students and can equip young people with the personal skills to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Schools see children and young people every day and can also play a role in identifying signs of mental health issues, providing early support, and referring students to health services.

To support school communities achieve this, the Mental Health Toolkit provides expert guidance and resources on mental health promotion and support aimed at schools and school communities, health and wellbeing workforces and mental health practitioners. It draws from existing Department resources, guidance and programs and leverages expert external advice on promoting and supporting mental health in schools.

A Quick Guide to Student Mental Health and Wellbeing resources is available for schools, students, parents and carers looking to access expert guidance and resources to support wellbeing in one place. The quick guide includes resources and supports:

  • for schools, to promote student mental health and wellbeing, provide early support and refer students to the right services
  • for students, to help them look after their own health and wellbeing
  • for parents and carers, to help them support and build their child's physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Thunderstorm Asthma

Thunderstorm asthma can happen suddenly to people in spring or summer when there is a lot of pollen in the air and the weather is hot, dry, windy and stormy.

People with asthma and/or hay fever need extra protection to avoid thunderstorm asthma between September and January in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This means using preventer medicine every day and always having a reliever inhaler (blue puffer) ready. See your doctor to get the best asthma and/or hay fever medication plan and provide this to Audrey in our front office.
