Problem Based Learning (PBL)

PBL by Ada Breach

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is an exciting project that my classmates and I have recently begun. I think I speak for all year 7’s when I say I can’t wait to see what opportunities and excitement this program brings. We work in groups of 3 or 4 to complete tasks and eventually create and present a solution to a problem that the world is currently facing. These problems are based off the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which were released in 2016. Some examples of these goals are gender equality, no poverty and climate action. We have time in our core subjects to work on this project and our solution in eventually presented to our class, which is our own small-scale United Nations.

We have only just begun and PBL has already provided many learning opportunities as well as the potential for skill development. In our first lesson, we were introduced to the project and we watched a video outlining the 17 goals, which was both interesting and informative. This video also helped us to believe that we, even as just 12 and 13-year old’s, can make a difference in this world. We then developed a team contract, where we worked with our group members to agree on rules that we will follow throughout the duration of this project.

Now comes the exciting part… we have just begun to research into the individual goals, and what we can do to improve the situation. Soon we shall, in our groups, choose what area we would like to focus on, before developing our solutions and discovering more about our topic. From there anything is possible!
