HEALTHY RELATONSHIPS
Chattering entered the room as students of 5C sprinted towards the room after a lengthy, pleasurable lunch time! Wind howled, hitting the frames of the windows whilst students of 5C gazed with memorization, entering the room. It was Monday 9 September 2019 and the students of 5C were in for a huge surprise!
Within 5C, it transpired that Glen Eira youth leadership councillor Nat/Natalie had visited our class, to teach us more about relationships and different leadership skills that a leader shows, and how we can use does skills within our everyday life!
This was especially due to the reason that many year 5 students had started “Peer Mediation” (a program which helps students solve junior students problems by using leadership skills), therefore this was an amazing opportunity to build and learn more about how to improve our leadership skills!
One of the main parts of this incursion/session was looking at relationships which look into different problems, seeing if these problems are causing an unhealthy friendship. To expand our knowledge about this topic, we looked at a traffic light system which showed different warnings when it comes to a friendship. Afterwards, we looked at when a friendship should not be taken onwards (bullied by the friend). Finally, we looked at positive friendships and even how we can improve those friendships even more! Another highlight of this session was the different discussions we had. Having discussions was a great way for students to build further thought and knowledge about the area that Nat was speaking about!
As the day had come to an end, the healthy relationships workshop had also come to a grasped lesson for all of us. This session assisted with many leadership qualities that we needed to learn and we were able to show the different leadership qualities we had. These sessions were sessions and lessons which would motivate and instruct us towards becoming a leader! We would also like to give a huge thank you to Nat/Natalie for spending her time to come educate and inspire us!

GRADE 1- SHARING THE PLANET
Excitement filled the room of the Grade 1 students entered the classroom. At first, half the class scanned the room anxiously with their keen, eager eyes, searching for what had made the others so utterly excited. Then, as their eyes flickered to the locker area, they knew. The first few stunning green leaves had grown on their beautiful little beanstalks that they’d been growing for the last week. They squealed excitedly at the thought of progress; progress at last! They couldn’t stop looking at their unbelievable plants for the rest of the day.
For the past week, the Grade one students have been learning about how plants grow and how they can grow their own plants, for their unit of inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet.’ They grew butter beans, broad beans and purple beans. It was a very valuable learning experience and they learned why plants need certain amounts of water and sunlight to live and thrive. The Grade 1 students are very excited to eat their beans once they are all done growing!
They used clear plastic cups wrapped in paper towel (to reduce wetting the table surface) and water them frequently. They had lots of fun as it was their first time planting anything at school before. Some of them have had experience at home, but most students did not. This planting session has proved to be very effective in teaching our young students how to grow their own plants and contribute to the ecosystem.
