MATHEMATICS

We have been wasting no time in getting back into a routine with our Maths lessons in Term Four. Using every possible opportunity to continue developing comprehension and accuracy in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Statistics and Probability, our students have touched base with many concepts.

In Number and Algebra, we have spent time understanding the concept of BIDMAS / BODMAS, allowing the students to explore number equations using brackets. Following this clear step by step process, allows our senior students to grasp mathematical skills that bridge primary school and secondary school.

Continuing in this strand, we have spent the last few weeks focusing on converting a fraction to a decimal to a percentage. This is a tricky concept to understand but our students showed great growth in completing a range of online and workbook tasks. A great source of mathematical information is the Kahn Academy Website

( https://www.khanacademy.org/ ). The video link below, was  used during one session which assisted our student to tune in and gather further knowledge and skill sets:

https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-sixth-grade-math/cc-6th-ratios-prop-topic/cc-6th-percent-decimal-conversions/v/representing-a-number-as-a-decimal-percent-and-fraction

This week we are revisiting working with fractions, in particular adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We use a method called BOM BOM POW / POW POW to solve these fraction equations. An example of this is in the video 'Maths the Wacky Way': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o32bnoLZaM

In Measurement, we studied and worked with identifying different angles such as acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex, full rotation. We learnt how to use protractors, how to read angles and how to draw them. Students completed Slideshows identifying angles in our surrounding environment. A few examples are attached below:

Finally, with Statistics and Probability, we have touched a bit more on gathering suitable data and developing appropriate graphs to present and display results. We used whole school collated results on the footy teams we all support. What a mix of teams we support at Upwey South P.S. Check out the photos below. All students have discussed what mean, median, mode and range is and they have learnt how do they use data to identify each one of these.

SPECIAL AWARDS - TERM 4 2020

Congratulations to all Year Five & Six students who have received Student of the Week awards during the term. We are proud of the respect, responsibility and resilience you are showing towards your learning. Here are a few of the students who we have celebrated during our 5/6 assemblies:

Year Six Graduation 2020- CovidSafe Arrangements

IT’S GRADUATION TIME!! With the year that our Year Six students have experienced, our aim is to provide our graduates with a graduation experience which will be a positive and memorable celebration, whilst still operating within CovidSafe Guidelines.

Over the past few weeks we have been finalising the details of our Graduation Ceremony for 2020. We have carefully examined the current restrictions, and are mindful that the format of our 2020 Graduation Ceremony must fall within the current guidelines provided by the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET).

Following further announcements from the Victorian Government, which are expected to be made on Sunday 22nd November, we will provide a detailed communication early next week, which will outline the finer details of the event.

However, in the meantime please add the following dates to your family calendar:

The Graduation will be split into two evenings,

  • Friday 11th December (on-site graduation for students only; with approximate planned schedule of 5:00pm-8:30pm)
  • Wednesday 16th December (virtual graduation open to all community members; with approximate planned schedule of 6:40pm-7:40pm)

Please note that under DET’s current CovidSafe Guidelines,  Friday 11th December is a closed event (only for Year Six students and teachers). The online event scheduled for Wednesday 16th December can be viewed by extended family members through a live link which will be provide in our next communication.

We look forward to sharing more news with you early next week, however in the meantime please make sure you add the above dates to your calendar.

If you have any queries regarding the Graduation Ceremony, please direct these to Llew Humphries – Llewela.Humphries@education.vic.gov.au

BYOiD 2020 - User Agreement

As our senior students have returned to on-site learning, we bring to your attention the expectations of the BYOiD Program.

This is particularly important, as over the period of Remote Learning a number of students installed social messaging apps onto their devices. Many of these apps are not age-appropriate. Therefore, we encourage you to speak with your child about the appropriate use of their device.

Remember the rule: If you wouldn't say the comment in front of your teachers, then don't say it on the screen!
