MATHS IN GRADE THREE AND FOUR

This term, our primary focus has been in the Number and Algebra

strand. Students have learnt about financial transactions where

they needed to make sure the correct change was given. Students

used play money to work out which notes and coins would be

required to make purchases and also went shopping from a

catalogue to select food items for an imaginary picnic and add up the total cost.

Other topics we have been learning about include: Number patterns and basic algebra, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and mass and capacity.

Each lesson follows the gradual release of responsibility instructional model.

We start with specific teacher instruction (I do) which may involve songs, explanations, modeling of concepts etc.  This is then followed by the 'we do' part of the lesson. As a class we work on the concept together. This may include working through some examples together or playing some whole class games utilising the concept. The third part of our Maths lessons is the 'you do' section. Students use the knowledge they have learnt to then go and practise these skills. Students may work on digital technology, play games in small groups, complete hands on learning with partners or work in a small group with the teacher.

PRE-SERVICE TEACHER

We would like to offer a warm welcome to Mrs Sonia Abbas. Mrs Abbas is studying her Masters of Teaching and is currently completing a three week placement in 3/4A with Mrs Rowe. She is a very talented artist who in fact has also completed a Masters in Fine Art!  Mrs Abbas will be taking a number of lessons each day, working towards some full days by the end of her placement. The students are looking forward to a few extra drawing classes within the class over the next couple of weeks.
