Year 10 News

Daniel Murphy

Hello and welcome back to our parents, carers and other learning community members. I hope you all are settling back into the rhythm of on-site learning in Term 4. With such an interrupted year I would like to emphasise the importance of sleep in preparation for Year 10 students transiting into their senior schooling:

SLEEP AND YOUNG PEOPLE

I know many families got really out of routine during the long period of remote learning. Bedtimes possibly have been disrupted because there was no need to get up super early for school. It’s important to remember that young people need LOTS of sleep to function - the amount may surprise some people!! Kids aged 6 – 13 need around 10 – 12 hours of sleep a night. Say they have to get up at 7:30am to get to school by 8:30am, then that means that they need to be in bed, asleep, no later than 9:00pm. Teenagers 14 – 18 years need at least eight hours a night – this means that they need to be asleep by between 9 and 11pm if they get up at 7:30am. Of course, if they have to get up earlier, bedtime has to be earlier too. Some of the reasons that young people don’t get enough sleep is because screen time gets in the way, and sometimes this happens when the grownups think the kids are actually asleep. It is a very good idea to store devices outside the bedroom at night. A break from screens for ½ an hour before bedtime can also improve sleep quality.

Exams

In the coming weeks Year 10 students will run starting to shift their focus towards Year 11 VCE or VCAL. In preparation for this we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the upcoming exams. Year 10 exams will run during Week 9 of term 4 and will consist of English, Maths and for those students completing a science subject this semester a science exam.

Students will need to use class and homework time to fully prepare themselves for these important assessments at the end of a difficult year. If your child needs any extra assistance in preparing for these exams please do not hesitate to contact myself to arrange a meeting.

These exams will comply with covid safe guidelines.

Attendance matters

Due to the amount of on-site learning our year 10 students have missed this Year, the Year 10 team will be tracking and encouraging every student to be here every day. A big focus on this term will be matching their current requirements with the demands of Year 11. This will hopefully create a smoother transition at the end of the year. Attendance expectations are important as ever during the senior years of their schooling with every lesson having key content and skills that your child will need to succeed.

Over the term in year 10 we will track each student’s individual attendance and celebrate the positive steps students take towards their schooling. Our Year Ten Attendance officer Megan Lemon, will be making daily phone calls to find out why your child is away, and make plans for work to be sent home, re-engagement or anything else we can do to have your child return to school as soon as possible, as we believe that attendance matters.
