REMEMBRANCE DAY

This year, our college observed Remembrance Day according to social distancing requirements. Rather than a formal assembly, we watched a wonderful and respectful pre-recorded service led by our 2021 College Captains. Particularly poignant was the montage shown during the minute of silence, the very heart of Australia’s yearly Remembrance Day commemoration.

Recently, we were notified of the passing of alumnus and army veteran John Barnes on the second of November. John’s name is proudly listed near the Enright Campus flagpole alongside the names of other former students who served in the military. Over his 20 years of service in the Australian Regular Army, John served in Vietnam and did tours of duty in Papua New Guinea, Malaya, Malaysia, and Borneo. He retired as a Warrant Officer, Class Two in 1981 and then became the School Marshall at Queens Anglican Grammar School in Ballarat.

John served in Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV). The AATTV is believed to be the most decorated Australian unit to serve in Vietnam; its members received over 100 decorations, including four Victoria Crosses during its existence. A total of 1,009 men served with the unit over a period of ten years.

We extend both our deepest condolences to John’s family and our thanks to John himself for his years of service to all Australians. St Joseph’s College is proud to count John Barnes as one of our own.

Lest we forget.

YEAR 11 COMPUTING PROJECT

Students were to use emerging technologies to produce a proof of concept for an object. The students choose a lightsaber and researched how they could use electronics and 3D printing to produce the object. They 3D printed and painted the lightsaber and wrote a report on how they would add functionality to the object with a lighting circuit board and an LED as well as a programmable audio sound card to produce specialised sounds when the button was pressed.

SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH

Caterina De Maria received a $250 bursary (sponsored by Engineers Australia) for her Experimental Research project in this year’s Science Talent Search (a state wide competition run each year by the Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria). A total of only 11 such bursaries were awarded across the State this year (with a further three $500 bursaries also being awarded).

Caterina’s project was an investigation into the factors that affect buoyancy in water. Specifically, she investigated the buoyancy of different types of water (tap water, rainwater, river water, salt water and sugar solution) across a range of temperatures.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS HOLD A STEM FAIR

On Tuesday December 1, 2020, all Year 7 students presented a wide range of STEM projects to Year 8 students.

The aim of the fair is to give students the opportunity to communicate their work to others about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Year 7 students have been working on their projects for the past few weeks, to have their presentations finalised for December 1.

Each year, at the end of Term 4, all Year 7 students prepare and present their projects to students, teachers and judges. The STEM fair has been taking place at the college for the past 11 years. All students responded very positively to the event. Kids Teaching Kids Science has been a powerful and engaging learning tool.
