Welcome to Country
Tuesday, 8 February
Our College commenced the year with a visit from Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Ringo Terrick, descendant of Indigenous icon William Barak. The newly enlarged College student body gathered as one for the first time to hear him speak, and conduct a Welcome to Country (Tanderrum) and Smoking Ceremony. We gathered coals that Uncle Ringo brought from a sacred fire burning at the 50th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, from where he’d just returned. These sacred coals will light the fire in the school’s yarning circle in the Indigenous Garden area. Uncle Ringo taught us of this Country and freely welcomed us to it.
