Yr 9 WWI History class visit to the Shrine of Remembrance

On Wednesday 23 November Ms. Torode, Mr. Watt and the Year 9 WWI History class travelled to the Shrine of Remembrance to learn about the history of the Shrine and the contributions of Victorians during war and peacekeeping operations.

Paul, one of the Shrine’s volunteers, guided students around the Shrine and discussed its significance in Victoria’s history. Paul conducted a short Service of Remembrance, where Rylee read a passage from Laurence Binyon’s ‘The Ode’.

Later, Ms. Torode showed students around the Galleries of Remembrance and discussed numerous artefacts including the importance of Victorian school children in the WWI war effort, Robert Grieve’s Victoria Cross and the SS Devanha’s Gallipoli landing boat. Students also learned about different service medals, military uniforms, John Monash’s role in the construction of the memorial and the secret messages returned servicemen building the Shrine left within the brickwork. Matilda and Mr. Watt counted the steps leading up to the Shrine’s entrance and worked out its significance in the construction of the memorial.

A tired and exhausting day but definitely well worth the visit!
