Numeracy at home

As your child’s first teacher, you play an important role in helping develop their numeracy skills from an early age. Numeracy skills give children an important start to their learning and development. They also help prepare them for daily life at all ages.

One way you can support your child’s understanding of mathematics and numeracy at home is…

Learn maths through playing games.

You can play children’s card games and games involving dice, such as Snakes and Ladders, maps, shapes and money. You can also read stories and notice the mathematics. Although these activities may seem simple and informal, they build on what children notice and question, give families the chance to talk about mathematical ideas and language, and show children that maths is used throughout the day.

Problem of the Fortnight

Work together with your family and see if you can find out the answers to the problems below. Hint: There is more than one possible answer!

Lower Years

A game costs $10 and you pay for it using coins. What coins might you use?

Middle Years

I am thinking of a number that has a 9 in the tenths place. What might my number be?

Senior Years

I calculated a percent of a number and got the answer 10. What percent and what number and what percent might I have used in my calculation?
